119 rice varieties are recognized as national varieties.

In the rice value chain, from production - harvesting - processing - distribution to consumption, rice varieties are the starting link and play a key role in determining the quality, yield and competitiveness of rice grains in the market.

Therefore, rice seed production and supply units increasingly focus on selection and classification to create many rice varieties that meet the standards for Vietnam's rice exports.

According to statistics from the Department of Crop Production, from June 2014 to December 31, 2019, 119 rice varieties were recognized as national varieties, which are still being commercialized for production.

From January 1, 2020 to May 2024, a total of 267 rice varieties were recognized under the Law on Cultivation, including: 152 varieties recognized for circulation; 82 varieties extended for circulation recognition and 33 rice varieties specially recognized.

Since 2024, high-quality rice varieties have dominated and been selected for production for export, especially when implementing the project "1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice" of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment .

According to the Department of Crop Production, Vietnam has a set of rice varieties that meet all the criteria: short-term, good resistance to pests and diseases, wide adaptability, high yield, good quality, which is the dream of many countries in the region. In addition, public-private partnership activities in recent times have also helped research, selection and commercialization of rice varieties to develop more and more. Many rice varieties of research institutes have been transferred to businesses, from which they have been quickly commercialized for production and contributed to the achievement of rice exports to many major markets in the world .

To help rice varieties be selected for purity and quality, research units have also started applying technology to identify and classify hundreds of different rice varieties to ensure stable rice seed quality. Understanding this, Mr. Doan Anh Vo, representative of Easy Rice Vietnam, said that in order to help units produce uniform rice seeds without losses, Easy Rice has invented the Easy Rice MP1 device, using artificial intelligence AI to support farmers and cooperatives to access more accurate and pure seed sources. AI will be trained on how to receive data through rice seed images. After building the initial database, AI can quickly, accurately and transparently verify based on real databases, not based on senses.

Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Vice President of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association, said that applying AI to rice production chain management helps the links in the chain operate more smoothly and accurately. Suppliers do not spend much time screening, and order recipients do not spend much manpower checking the quality of rice products. AI systems are provided with data on hundreds of rice varieties through images, as well as information to distinguish rice varieties, although the differences between rice varieties are not large when observing their shapes with the naked eye. But with this data source, the separation of rice varieties is increasingly more accurate. From this perspective, it also helps farmers have a source of pure quality seeds when putting them into production.

Rice farmers in the Mekong Delta have known how to apply digital technology and science to production management and input material regulation to ensure economic efficiency and environmental efficiency. Now, technologies to classify purebred and quality varieties help farmers take a step further to improve efficiency in the rice industry.

According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dinh An Agricultural Cooperative, AI technology helps to classify rice varieties correctly. Thanks to that, Dinh An Cooperative can supply quality rice varieties to commercial rice production units for export. In the past, Dinh An has also applied AI technology, creating many quality rice varieties that customers require. However, the market is still selective, as well as mixing rice varieties even at low rates, causing the quality of rice products to decline. Therefore, applying AI is an inevitable trend for consumers to be able to access the desired type of rice in providing food for their families and communities.

Mr. Pham Thai Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trung Anh High-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company, said that applying AI is necessary in the development of the rice chain, especially in the supply and selection of varieties to create commercial rice fields before selling rice to consumers. Rice is the final stage of the rice production chain, so Vietnamese rice importers usually accept mixing at the permitted ratio, but if the rice is also purebred and meets quality standards, it is also an encouraging thing in Vietnam's rice supply chain when approaching international customers.
