The orange growing area of Chan Thinh commune was only established about 10 years ago, decades behind the outer communes planned to grow oranges in Van Chan district (old). Although they came later, the people of Chan Thinh have gained a lot of experience in production; their thinking and ways of doing things are also very different.
Mr. Tran Thanh Tung in Kien Thinh 2 village said: “When I started growing oranges, the capital of Van Chan oranges, the old Tran Phu Farm town, started to have yellow leaf and root rot diseases. Experts determined that it was caused by fungi in the soil, the main cause of which was the use of intensive physical and chemical farming methods. Therefore, right from the beginning of planting, I selected and used good seeds and was determined to cultivate organically, ensuring safety for both producers and consumers.”

Mr. Tung currently has 6 hectares of oranges, of which more than 2 hectares have been harvested, bringing his family an income of nearly 700 million VND per year. He weeds and fertilizes twice a year, adds fish protein (composting fish with biological products) and actively applies manual pest control measures: creating canopy, trapping flies...
Mr. Tung added: There are only 2 months left until the orange harvest season, so during this period, we regularly visit the garden to promptly detect pests and diseases for treatment. At the same time, we control the amount of irrigation water appropriately, add composted manure to supplement nutrients; prune small fruits, diseased fruits, and prune non-fruit bearing branches to keep the tree airy, with enough light and air. In addition, to always be proactive in output, we have contacted traders to sell products via videos and images.

Not only Mr. Tung, hundreds of orange growers in Chan Thinh also have similar methods. That is, limiting the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, increasing manual measures, biological traps or self-soaking organic fertilizers to protect the soil, protect the environment and save costs. For many years, the 3 communes: Dai Lich, Chan Thinh, Tan Thinh (before the merger) have regularly implemented instructions and production plans from pest prevention and control to care techniques, harvesting, post-harvest care according to the correct technical process, increasing production in the direction of VietGAP, organic; encouraging the introduction of new high-value orange and tangerine varieties for trial planting...

Mr. Vu Van Chieng in Bang La village shared: “In addition to popular local orange varieties such as Canh orange, Sen orange, Vinh lemon... I also grow 200 Thai tangerine trees. This variety has small fruit but has high value from 35 - 40,000 VND/kg, the harvest time is around January before Tet, after the harvest season of traditional orange varieties, so it is very easy to consume”.

Currently, Chan Thinh commune has 555 hectares of oranges, of which over 300 hectares are renovated with new varieties. On average, each hectare of oranges brings the local people an income of 500 million VND/year, an increase of 150 million VND/ha compared to 2020.

Mr. Truong Manh Quyet - Chairman of Chan Thinh Commune People's Committee said: "In the coming time, the commune will actively mobilize and guide orange growers to produce according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP quality standards to be granted growing area codes, product barcodes, and traceability.
In addition to maintaining and developing the existing 555 hectares of oranges, the commune continues to plan a new planting area of 120 hectares in the villages of Ke, Bang La 2, Khe Sung, Khe Nhu, Dong Ban and issue a Project on Developing Key Economic Models in the commune for the period 2025 - 2030, to support orange growers to expand this key crop in the right direction, contributing to the goal of raising the average income to 70 million VND/person/year by 2030"
Although coming later, Chan Thinh has risen to become a specialized orange growing area of the province with large scale, good quality and diverse varieties. We believe that with the strategic vision of the new government apparatus and the efforts and innovation in thinking of the people, this year's orange crop and the following years will always be bountiful.
