The Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore cited data from the Singapore Enterprise Authority, saying that in the first six months of 2025, Singapore's total rice import turnover from the world reached about SGD 248.9 million, an increase of 10.8% over the same period in 2024.
Singapore continued to boost its white rice imports, with a value of SGD 130 million, up 83.7% over the same period last year. This group of products accounted for nearly 52.4% of Singapore's total rice imports.
Next is Hom Mali white rice with import value reaching 44.2 million SGD (up 11.8%), accounting for 17.8% of the proportion.
In terms of partners, India is currently the largest rice supplier to the Singapore market with an import turnover of SGD 87.8 million, accounting for 35.3% of the total market share. Singapore focuses on importing two main groups from India: white rice and parboiled rice.
Thailand is the second largest rice supplier in this market, with import turnover reaching 76.2 million SGD, accounting for 30.6% of the market share. Meanwhile, Vietnam is the third largest rice supplier.
Notably, white rice is the item with the highest import value among Vietnam's rice product groups in Singapore, reaching 38.6 million SGD, an increase of 11.9% over the same period in 2024.
According to statistics, white rice is a product group that Singapore has diversified its supply from more than 20 countries. However, Vietnam's market share for this product group is currently second, only after India (SGD 60.9 million, accounting for 46.7% of the market share).
In addition to white rice, fragrant rice (milled/hulled) and sticky rice are two other Vietnamese commodity groups with high import value to Singapore.
In the first six months of 2025, the import turnover of these two groups reached SGD 15.5 million and SGD 4.7 million, respectively, accounting for 57% and 61% of Singapore's import market share for each group.
Although the import value of these two groups from Vietnam shows signs of decreasing compared to the same period in 2024, Vietnam still temporarily holds the leading position in supply.
However, overall, in the first six months of 2025, the import turnover of rice products in general from Vietnam to Singapore only reached 60.9 million SGD, down 17.1% over the same period last year.
This decrease may come from the decrease in Vietnam's rice export price. According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , Vietnam's average rice export price in the first half of 2025 is estimated at 517.5 USD/ton, down 18.4% over the same period last year.
The Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore believes that in the coming time, Vietnamese rice will continue to face great competition from similar products from India, Thailand and Japan.
The Singaporean Government's proposal to sign a bilateral trade agreement on rice with Vietnam is expected to contribute to stabilizing Vietnam's rice exports to Singapore in the future.
