The joy of pear season. |
In mid-July, we arrived at Phieng Phang village, Thuong Minh commune, right at the pear harvest season. Before our eyes were large, golden pears hanging heavily on the branches. Local people said that in 2019, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry started implementing the project "Application of science and technology in pear production in Bac Kan ".
Seeing that the model is suitable for climate and soil conditions, some households in Phieng Phang village have proactively registered to test planting VH6 pear variety on hilly land that was previously mainly used for growing corn and cassava.
Thanks to the application of science and technology and good fertilization, the family's pear garden is full of fruit. Although it has only entered the third year of harvesting, with an average selling price of 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, it will bring high income to the family.
Not only Mr. Thanh's family, in Phieng Phang village, people have invested in planting VH6 pear variety and some other pear varieties with an area of over 5 hectares of harvested pears. In particular, many households have converted corn hill land to pear growing and have initially seen clear results.
Mr. Trieu Dinh Quang said: Pear trees are suitable for the climate and soil here, easy to care for, and have few pests and diseases. The villagers are very excited because this year the pears have both a good harvest and good prices. The villagers are focusing on harvesting and selling mainly through the community and sending them to localities in the province as gifts.
Seizing the potential of pear trees, in recent years, local authorities have coordinated with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry to build a creative agricultural tourism model in Phieng Phang, including pear picking experiences and ecological garden visits.
Yen Duong Cooperative also participates in supporting people to build an organic pear growing model; build the Na Pai pear brand, design packaging models, and build products to serve the market and tourists.
Ms. Ma Thi Ninh, Director of Yen Duong Cooperative, said: The Cooperative is coordinating with villagers to build a pear growing cooperative, build a brand for Na Pai pears, and aim for OCOP products in the near future.

Pear trees are increasingly showing their ability to adapt to climate conditions, soil conditions and farming practices of the Phieng Phang people. From the initial results, people are continuing to convert the hilly land area that was used to grow corn with low efficiency to grow pears.
With the support of scientists, cooperatives and local authorities, pear trees are not only a new crop but also a hope on the journey of poverty reduction and sustainable economic development in the highlands here.
