The book “Ho Chi Minh in the visual arts” is published by the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in collaboration with The Gioi Publishing House, printed in Vietnamese and English, 235 pages thick. The book cover is an image of the famous sculpture “The Father of the Armed Forces” created by visual artist Nguyen Minh Dinh (1940-2001) in 1984.

Representative of the Editorial Board, Dr. Nguyen Anh Minh, Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, said that there have been many publications about President Ho Chi Minh , however, “Ho Chi Minh in visual arts” is one of the rare books that has been carefully selected about the image of Uncle Ho in visual arts, especially in the book there are details of each historical moment and the process of creating the work, the emotions and concerns of the artist when creating about Him…

The image of Uncle Ho on stage, a great source of inspiration for artists

On this occasion, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum held an exhibition called “Ho Chi Minh in the visual arts”, displaying 60 selected works from a collection of hundreds of valuable works about President Ho Chi Minh by Vietnamese and foreign painters, sculptors, and artisans.

Viewers have the opportunity to admire the gouache painting “Forever grateful to Uncle Ho” created in 1969 by artist Nguyen Quang Phong (1925-2013), the first work in the collection of the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts on the theme of President Ho Chi Minh, to the large-scale oil painting “President Ho wades through the stream to work” (2009) by artist Bui Van Hoan (born in 1971), the most recently collected work of the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts on this theme.

Many works of artists have become famous at home and abroad, leaving a deep impression on the public: "Cau Coong learns to open his mind" by Van Giao, "Uncle Ho returns to Pac Bo in spring" by Duong Tuan, "Uncle Ho reads the Declaration" by Nguyen Duong...

The image of Uncle Ho's revolutionary activities appears through the sketches "President Ho working in the Viet Bac resistance zone" by artist Phan Ke An, "Uncle Ho working in Viet Bac" by artist Nguyen Van Ty, "Leaving the grass hut, Uncle Ho continued marching" by artist Trong Kiem, "Uncle Ho went on a mission" by artists Tran Dinh Tho, Nguyen Thu, Nguyen Dai Luong...

Present at the exhibition, Associate Professor Nguyen Trong Cat stood silently for a long time in front of his work, the woodcut “Uncle Ho with the doctor” (created in 1980). The artist is now nearly a hundred years old but still very clear-headed, sharing that he created the work with the context of President Ho Chi Minh visiting a clinic in Ung Hoa ( Hanoi ) in 1963.

In his heart, he always remembers and cherishes the fact that Uncle Ho always cared about the people's health... Another work at the exhibition that attracted viewers with its rare style and eye-catching bright red color was "Uncle Ho Chi Minh" by artist Phi Tu Gam (aka Huynh Van Gam, 1922-1987). In 1953, the artist painted Uncle Ho's portrait according to the Tet painting model and it was widely printed throughout the Southern provinces, loved and respected by cadres, soldiers, and people. Uncle Ho in the painting is middle-aged, with a black beard and hair; a high forehead, and bright eyes.

The work is unique because the Tet painting has the meaning of wishing for luck, a beautiful and long-standing cultural tradition, and at the same time has the meaning of a propaganda painting, encouraging the spirit of resistance. The exhibition also introduces the gouache painting "Uncle Ho with the Central Highlands" by Ba Na artist Xu Man (real name Siu Yong, 1925-2007) with a touching story behind it. The ethnic minority artist of the Central Highlands was fortunate to meet Uncle Ho twice and was encouraged by Uncle Ho to try to paint because "having the conditions to exploit the folk art of the Central Highlands people, never forget your roots". Throughout the life and career of artist Xu Man, the image of Uncle Ho was depicted in more than 100 works.

The exhibition features two paintings of Uncle Ho by foreign artists. One is a portrait of Uncle Ho by Korean artist Lee Sang Phill, with bright and striking colors. The second portrait was painted by American veteran David Thomas. He is one of the artists and veterans who have spent decades trying to heal the wounds of war and connect the two countries' communities through art.
