Kien Giang inaugurates the Memorial Temple for heroic martyrs of Hon Dat district

(Chinhphu.vn) - On June 22, Kien Giang province held a ceremony to celebrate the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2025); posthumously conferred the honorary title of "Heroic Vietnamese Mother"; awarded the Independence Medal to the martyrs' families and inaugurated the Memorial Temple for Heroic Martyrs of Hon Dat district.

Attending the ceremony were former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung; General Le Hong Anh, former Standing member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat; Standing Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thanh Nghi; Secretary of the Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Tien Hai; leaders of Kien Giang province through the periods; Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, Heroes of the People's Armed Forces, Heroes of Labor; relatives of Heroic Vietnamese Mothers and relatives of heroes, and families of martyrs.

At the ceremony, the President's Decision on awarding the honorary title of "Heroic Vietnamese Mother" to 21 mothers in Kien Giang province was announced. At the same time, the President's Decision on awarding the Third Class Independence Medal to 6 families of martyrs in Kien Giang province was announced. Of these, 4 families have only one child who is a martyr and 2 families have many children who are martyrs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan said that through the wars of national liberation, defending the Fatherland and fulfilling international duties, more than 20,000 cadres and soldiers of Kien Giang heroically sacrificed their lives; tens of thousands of wounded and sick soldiers; more than 2,200 people were infected with Agent Orange. Many families sacrificed many children for the Fatherland. Examples such as mother Pham Thi Khanh in Hon Dat, mother Le Thi Dieu in Tan Hiep, who sacrificed up to 7 children, are beautiful symbols of patriotism and sacrifice.

Places such as Hon Dat, Hon Me, Hon Soc, Phu Quoc prison, Bang Bien Phu forest... are vivid evidence of war crimes as well as the steadfast and indomitable spirit of the people of Kien Giang. With that tradition, up to now, Kien Giang province is honored to have 83 collectives and 41 individuals awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces; 1,800 Heroic Vietnamese Mothers have been awarded or posthumously awarded; tens of thousands of medals and badges of all kinds have been awarded to cadres, soldiers and people.

Over the past 78 years, the work of “Repaying gratitude” has always been of deep concern to the Party Committee, government and people of Kien Giang. Kien Giang province has established a Fund for Repaying Gratitude with resources of tens of billions of VND; supported housing for 3,132 families of meritorious people; searched for and collected 2,144 martyrs’ remains in Cambodia and more than 1,043 remains in the province…

Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan emphasized: Hon Dat District's Martyrs' Memorial Temple is a project with profound political, historical, cultural and humanistic significance. Ba Hon area - a place marking the heroic feats and indomitable spirit of the army and people of Kien Giang - is now adorned with a project honoring history and educating traditions. This is also the eternal resting place of the martyrs, a place for future generations to follow, remember and show gratitude.

According to the organizers, the project was built from the heart of General Le Hong Anh, an outstanding son of Kien Giang, with the joint efforts of groups and individuals. This will be a red address, a place to foster patriotism and revolutionary spirit for the young generation, contributing to building Kien Giang to be more and more beautiful and civilized.

To continue to better implement the work of gratitude, Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan requested Party committees at all levels, authorities, Fatherland Front, and organizations to continue to promote the propaganda of the Party and State's policies and guidelines for war invalids, martyrs, and people with meritorious services; fully and promptly resolve the regimes and policies for people with meritorious services. Step up the search and collection of martyrs' remains.

In addition, pay more attention to job creation, improve the material and spiritual life of families with meritorious services; manage, preserve and promote the effectiveness of the Memorial Temple for Heroes and Martyrs of Hon Dat district so that this place is always a place of gratitude and education for generations.
