The win was not only Sinner's 16th consecutive win over his countrymen, but also his 26th consecutive win at Grand Slam tournaments on hard courts.

Sinner has also equalled Nicola Pietrangeli's record of 86 Grand Slam wins, and is on course to become the first player to successfully defend the US Open title since Roger Federer in 2008.

In addition, by reaching the quarterfinals, Jannik Sinner reached the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year for the first time.

In the semi-finals of this year's US Open, Sinner will face 25th seed Felix Auger Aliassime.
