US Open Final: Double win for Sinner or Alcaraz?

The two have won the last seven Grand Slam titles between them, and they will make history in New York by becoming the first players in the Open Era to play in three Grand Slam finals in the same season. After Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the US Open final at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 8th, at 7am (Vietnam time), will bring a double prize.

Whoever wins in New York will also take the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings. Sinner has held the spot for 65 consecutive weeks, while Alcaraz is aiming to return to the spot he last held in September 2023.

This winner-takes-all match could also be pivotal in the race for the year-end ATP No. 1 ranking. Alcaraz currently leads Sinner by 1,890 points in the ATP Live Race To Turin, but a win in New York would see the Italian close the gap to 1,190 points. Both players have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, the final major of the year.

The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has become one of the most exciting in modern sports . Three years ago in New York, Alcaraz saved a match point in a stunning five-set quarterfinal win on his way to the 2022 US Open title. Since then, every time the two have faced off, it has been an exciting and high-profile affair.

Sinner and Alcaraz had never met in a Grand Slam final before this year's Roland Garros. Now, as they prepare for their third consecutive major title, they have become genuine rivals on the road to winning titles.

Sinner said after the semi-final that he felt facing Alcaraz again: “He’s the one who pushed me to the limit, which is great, because then you get the best feedback a player can get. We’ve been playing against each other a lot lately, so things are changing.

Always when we go on the pitch we are more aware, because him or me, we both try to prepare the game in different ways and tactics. It's great for the sport to have competition, hopefully there are great games ahead. And then we will see. I am someone who loves these challenges, and I like to put myself in such positions and see how it goes."

Alcaraz, who leads Sinner 9-5 in the head-to-head series, said: “I always learn from my previous matches. If I had to play Sinner, I would obviously learn from the last matches I played against him. The last match or the last three matches, I would look back and see what I did wrong, what I did well in the matches, just to go to the finals in a good way.”

Both Sinner and Alcaraz have been in impressive form at Flushing Meadows. Sinner is on a 27-match winning streak at majors on hard courts, dropping just two sets in his six matches. Meanwhile, second seed Alcaraz hasn't dropped a set and looked sharp in his semi-final win over Novak Djokovic.

"I think Sinner's fitness has improved a lot, it's obviously no secret. He's talked about his physical condition that needs to improve, and I think in the last two years he's improved a lot physically. His games are really physically demanding so to be able to play at 100% for two, three, four hours, I think that's the biggest improvement he's made in recent years," Alcaraz said of Sinner, who had to stop playing with a stomach problem in his semi-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime, but later declared "there's nothing to worry about".

As for Sinner, he highly appreciated Alcaraz's serving ability: "Alcaraz has improved his serving ability a lot. I feel like he serves much better with better speed, but his winning percentage is always very high. Much more certain, because maybe before he was up and down a lot. Now he is very stable."

While it may be hard to believe that Sinner (24, 4 majors) and Alcaraz (22, 5 majors) can improve on the consistently excellent form they have shown, fans are used to seeing the unexpected from both stars. In the early hours of September 8, inside the 23,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium, it was the perfect setting for a dramatic continuation of a relentless rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner.
