On September 14, the project "Hue - Plastic-reducing city in Central Vietnam" sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund in Vietnam WWF - Norway through WWF - Vietnam in coordination with Hue University of Sciences organized the launching ceremony of the pilot model "Deposit - Refund" in Hue city.
The Deposit and Return System (DRS) is a modern management tool, considered an effective solution to implement the extended responsibility of the manufacturer.
When purchasing bottled or canned beverages, consumers will pay a small deposit. When returning the used bottles or cans to a collection point, the buyer will receive this amount back.
This model has been successfully applied in more than 40 countries in the world in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Hue City is the first city in Southeast Asia to pilot this model.
The main objectives of the pilot model in Hue include: raising awareness and changing the behavior of the community, especially young people, in sorting waste at source, implementing proper collection, promoting responsible shopping and increasing the rate of recycling waste recovery; testing the "Deposit - Refund" model for beverage packaging, especially plastic bottles and collecting lessons learned, difficulties and advantages to serve as a basis for replication; contributing to reducing the loss of plastic waste into the environment.
The model will be piloted with bottle collection machines located at Hue University of Sciences and Nera Garden apartment building and will start on September 20.
According to Director of WWF-Vietnam's Plastic Reduction Program Nguyen Thi Dieu Thuy, the Deposit-Refund model is a pioneering step of Hue to strengthen its commitment to building Hue into a plastic-reducing city, opening up many new opportunities but also coming with many challenges. The success of the model requires the cooperation and efforts of relevant parties to work towards a green, sustainable future, free of plastic pollution for Hue city.
Dr. Bui Quang Vu, Chairman of the Council of Hue University of Sciences, said that implementing the "Deposit - Refund" model right in the school environment is not only practical, but also contributes to forming sustainable consumption habits, helping each student, lecturer and school staff directly experience and act for a green future.
On this occasion, hundreds of union members, students of Hue University of Sciences and volunteers joined Green Sunday to clean up trash and remove hot spots in the Hue University planning area, Ho Dac Di Street, An Cuu Ward, Hue City.
