Director James Cameron talks about the ill-fated ship Titan

Speaking to ABC News, filmmaker and Titanic expert James Cameron said the Titan likely tried to surface after losing contact with the outside world as it approached the Titanic wreckage. The director also said that all five passengers on board were probably aware of the problem before the ship was crushed in a catastrophic explosion.

"The hull of the OceanGate (US) submersible has a system of sensors installed inside, and sends out warning signals when they start to crack," Mr. Cameron explained why he thinks the passengers knew their time of death had come.

In addition, the director said he had received information from sources in the deep-sea exploration community that those on board had dropped heavy objects in an effort to rise to the surface.

What did the director of the movie Titanic say about the tragedy of the submarine Titan being crushed in the ocean?

Mr Cameron and others had tried to warn OceanGate about the unsafe condition of the submersible and the risk of disaster during their tour of the Titanic wreck at a depth of 3,800 metres.

Robert Ballard, a retired US Navy officer who discovered the Titanic in 1984, said authorities “immediately knew” where to look when they heard the sound of the Titan’s explosion. However, it took days for the robot to reach the site.

"We detected the explosion with an underwater tracking system, and the US Navy passed that information to the US Coast Guard, and we immediately knew where to look, but it took time to get the robot boat there," said Mr. Ballard.
