Gyokeres wants to move to Arsenal instead of MU. |
The Swedish striker was pursued by both Arsenal and Manchester United this summer. Manchester United were said to be keen on Gyokeres as coach Ruben Amorim had worked with him at Sporting. However, according to Record , Gyokeres decided not to go to Old Trafford and Arsenal was the most likely destination.
MU's board of directors contacted Gyokeres and Sporting directly this week, but the offer from the "Red Devils" was not enough to convince the 27-year-old striker. The lack of a place in the European Cup is a minus point for the Old Trafford club.
Arsenal made an initial offer of £55m but it was rejected. Gyokeres is said to be angry because he had an "undercover" agreement with Sporting that he would be allowed to leave if they received an offer of that amount.
Another complication arose from a clause in Gyokeres’ contract with Sporting when he joined from Coventry in 2023. Gyokeres’s agent would be entitled to 10% of any bid of £51m that was rejected, forcing Sporting president Frederico Varandas to find a way to make up the shortfall if he sold for less.
Arsenal are set to make a second offer, but it now depends on whether Gyokeres' representatives and Sporting can reach an agreement. If not, Sporting will demand that the £84m release clause be activated.
Meanwhile, MU is likely to turn to Victor Osimhen. However, the Nigerian striker must reduce his salary to join Old Trafford.
