Fierce street fighting in Pokrovsk, Azov unit on duty

Street fighting raged inside Pokrovsk; Azov battalions pressed in from behind, keeping the Ukrainians at bay.

The Russian Ministry of Defense 's August battlefield summary, with a map highlighting the battlefield achievements of the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF), shows that the claims of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) and Western media, about "Ukrainian counteroffensive successes north of Pokrovsk" are not accurate.

The “Dobropillia Salient” is still marked “red” on the map (indicating Russian control). Russian media specifically noted that the two-week-long AFU counterattack towards the town of Zolotyi Kolodyaz, north of Pokrovsk, had completely failed, leading to the AFU retreating west under Russian artillery fire.

Meanwhile, Russian forces captured the village of Udachne, southwest of Pokrovsk; not only was it the largest coal mine in Donbass, but it also gave the RFAF another attack point into Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, in addition to the Dobropillia bridgehead.

On September 1, in the area north of the Pokrovsk encirclement, Russian assault troops encountered fierce resistance from Ukrainian troops when advancing into Myrnohrad, suffering heavy casualties and losses of weapons, forcing them to retreat from the area north of Myrnohrad.

On the same day, the Russian offensive in the central part of Pokrovsk also encountered difficulties, leading to bloody street fighting with Ukrainian troops. According to a reliable source, cited by the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian troops advanced to the streets of Likhachev, Shevchenko.

After the failed counterattack at the Dobropilya salient, the main forces of the 2nd Battalion of the 12th Azov Brigade and the 3rd Battalion of the 14th Azov Brigade were transferred to Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad to strengthen the defense.

Their main task in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad is to command and supervise the battle, and only play a secondary role in defensive counterattacks. Currently, some of the Ukrainian mixed brigades defending Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad have only about 30% of their strength left, and their morale is low.

American and European analysts fear that the Ukrainian army will quickly collapse if the RFAF launches a general attack on Pokrovsk in the near future. Therefore, the AFU has resorted to the old tactic of using Azov units to monitor the battle from behind, preventing the front forces from retreating on their own.

Latest war reports indicate that fierce fighting continues between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the city of Pokrovsk, with a tug-of-war over buildings and fortified positions. Russian forces are using air strikes against fortified Ukrainian positions, resulting in violent explosions.

A Russian military blogger noted that the RFAF missed its best opportunity to attack the city. In early August, when Russian commandos penetrated the center of Pokrovsk through tunnels, the Ukrainian internal defenses were not strong enough.

But now, Ukrainian forces on the outskirts as well as inside the city have been reinforced. Moreover, elite Ukrainian units, such as the 12th Azov Assault Brigade, are also present, adding to the difficulty and the RFAF must increase its numbers to be able to resolve the situation.

Ukrainian media reported that geotagged footage of the incursion of two AFU units into the village of Novoekonomichne, east of Myrnohrad, was posted on the Internet; even some Russian military Telegram channels claimed that the village had entered a “gray zone.”

Regarding the RFAF's breakthrough at the train station, according to some sources, Russian commandos and reconnaissance groups have penetrated deeper into the city of Pokrovsk, but most likely they are only conducting reconnaissance. According to Russian war correspondent Kotenok, Ukrainian troops are still present in the eastern suburbs of Troyanda. In the Yubileynaya area, Russian units have advanced to Tsvetochnaya Street (Olimpiets sports complex), occupied the Parkovy district and consolidated their positions in the western high-rise buildings in the southern part of the Lazurny district.

Southeast of Chunishino, Russian troops pushed the enemy back from a stronghold on the E-50 (M-30) highway and advanced through the plantations east of Chunishino in the direction of Novopavlovka. The Military Summary channel reported that the pressure around Pokrovsk - Mirnograd was maintained by the RFAF.

According to an internal source in the AFU General Staff, the RFAF Central Group of Forces has advanced to Zelenovka and controls 80% of the area, and has also entered the Lazurny district on a wide front.
