Binh Phuoc province currently owns nearly 10,000 hectares of durian, mainly concentrated in districts such as Phu Rieng, Bu Dang, Bu Gia Map, Loc Ninh and Phuoc Long town.

Recently, as durians are entering the fruiting stage and are about to be harvested, the area has been hit by heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. This harsh weather has farmers worried about the yield and quality of durians this season. Late-ripening durian orchards have been particularly hard hit, as prolonged rains have hampered the flowering and fruiting process.

For durian orchards in the harvest stage, heavy rainfall causes the fruit to be flooded, leading to damage and falling. This situation not only reduces output but also puts farmers at a disadvantage to traders, seriously threatening their income.

In addition to weather challenges, Binh Phuoc farmers also face difficulties in the export market. Many batches of durian exported to China were returned due to the discovery of excessive amounts of yellow O and heavy metal Cadmium. These substances pose a great risk to consumers’ health and damage the reputation of Vietnamese durian.

According to agricultural scientists, yellow O often appears due to some traders using it in post-harvest processing to make durian ripen evenly and have an attractive appearance. Meanwhile, Cadmium can accumulate from soil, water or fertilizer. However, through initial surveys, Cadmium content in soil and water in Binh Phuoc is very low. Moreover, local farmers have also reduced the use of chemical fertilizers, helping to significantly limit the presence of this substance in durian.

The current situation in Binh Phuoc shows that the durian industry is facing many challenges from nature and the market. To protect its reputation and ensure stable output, it is necessary to strengthen post-harvest quality control and raise awareness of both farmers and traders about food safety.
