African swine fever in Phu Tho causes tons of pigs to be destroyed
According to the source of Agriculture and Environment, African swine fever has attacked more than 103 communes in Phu Tho, affecting 3,400 households. To date, the number of pigs forced to be destroyed has exceeded 2,100 tons, causing great losses to the local people and agriculture sector.
After merging with Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh, Phu Tho became the province with the second largest livestock and poultry herd in the country. Currently, the province owns about 2 million pigs, 36.4 million poultry, 415,000 buffaloes and cattle, and 18,600 dairy cows.
The output of live meat for sale reaches 490,000 tons per year, of which pork accounts for 70%. In addition, the province produces 60,000 tons of fresh milk and 1.4 billion poultry eggs annually.
Phu Tho currently has 134,000 pig-raising households, most of which are small-scale farmers in residential areas. The province has nearly 3,000 small and medium-sized farms, with 43% of the total pig herd raised on farms.
Many large enterprises such as Dabaco Vietnam, CP Vietnam, CJ Vina Agri and Mavin have invested heavily in high-tech pig farming, contributing to improving the quality of pig herds. However, the small-scale farming model makes disease control more difficult.
African swine fever is posing a big problem for Phu Tho’s livestock industry. Authorities need to step up measures to control the epidemic, support people and businesses to minimize losses, and ensure market stability.
