African swine fever breaks out again, nearly 650,000 pigs are destroyed
African swine fever (ASF) is spreading across the country, causing serious damage to the livestock industry. Since the beginning of the year, the disease has spread to 34 provinces and cities, forcing the destruction of a huge number of pigs, nearly 650,000.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, 1,780 outbreaks have been detected. The Department of Animal Health explained that the outbreaks are mainly occurring in small-scale livestock farms. There, biosecurity is still limited. Disinfection, isolation, and control of people and vehicles entering and leaving the farms have not been strictly implemented.
The wet and rainy weather also reduces the effectiveness of disinfection measures, creating favorable conditions for the virus to survive and spread. Another worrying factor is the emergence of a new, more virulent strain of the virus, making disease control more difficult than ever.
Despite the widespread epidemic, the total pig herd nationwide increased by 0.5% by the end of August compared to the same period last year. However, negative news about the epidemic has severely affected consumer sentiment. Purchasing power in the market has decreased significantly, leading to a decrease in live pig prices, causing more difficulties for farmers.
The current pandemic situation poses many challenges for the agricultural sector. Can control measures effectively contain the pandemic and revive the market in the coming time?
