Mr. Luy (right) discusses the development of rice plants. |
That is the respectful sharing of Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Vice Chairman of the "Good Farmer" Club of Phu Vang commune, for the old farmer who has been attached to every inch of the field for decades, overcoming many difficulties with the rice plants to have bumper harvests. "As a "true" farmer, Mr. Nguyen Luy is loved and respected by most of the villagers for his spirit of overcoming difficulties and loyalty to the fields. From nothing, he has made everything, is an example for the people in the area to have the motivation to rise up" - Mr. Nguyen Van Toan affirmed.
Under the scorching sun, the sturdy figure of an old farmer is working hard in the field. “At first, I was a carpenter and worked in many other provinces, but being away from home was very difficult. So I decided to return to my hometown and start working hard in the fields,” Mr. Luy smiled simply, sharing his story of sticking to the land and the fields for the past several decades.
Mr. Luy returned to his hometown to farm in 1995. At that time, his family had 3 members, and Mr. Luy was assigned 6 sao of rice fields. At that time, Vinh Thai commune was a difficult area with many low-lying areas, making it very difficult for farmers. In other areas of the commune, farmers still managed to produce 2 rice crops per year, but in Bau B area, people could only produce one crop, called the missed crop, with the sowing and harvesting time being later than the crop schedule. The remaining time was flooded and the land was left fallow.
Feeling sorry for the land, waiting for people to finish harvesting the missed crop, Mr. Luy came to ask for a job. After receiving approval, Mr. Luy and two relatives rented an excavator, bordered an area within their production capacity, worked hard, persevered many times more, overcame and overcame difficulties that others had to "surrender". The efforts of Mr. Luy and his two "colleagues" were rewarded with golden rice crops, affirming the breakthrough: On the Bau B field, for generations, one crop was barren land with white water, now both crops of rice are full of joy.
After 3 years of successful testing, Mr. Luy started to expand the area in Bau B field. Farmers in the area also "followed" Mr. Luy to expand production together, not letting Bau B land go to waste. From Mr. Luy's initial exploitation, Bau B field is now vast, with two rice harvests, increasing sustainable income for farmers.
When the movement to bring mechanization into agricultural production developed, Mr. Luy sold all his buffaloes and focused on investing in machinery: combine harvesters, plows, tillers, pumps..., with a total value of more than 800 million VND, both for use on his family's fields and to serve the people. "There were years when the harvest was good, I earned a net profit of 500 million VND/2 crops from rice" - Mr. Luy was excited. At the same time, he added that when he brought the combine harvester to another province to harvest for hire, his income from each harvest, after deducting expenses, was nearly 200 million VND. Thanks to that, the family's economy became increasingly prosperous.
Now, nearly sixty years old, Mr. Luy is still a top farmer in the locality, an active member of the “Good Farmer Production Club” who works hard from dawn to dusk, cultivating over 8 hectares of rice fields. “At Mr. Luy’s house, certificates of merit from all levels are neatly arranged, piled high. More importantly, Mr. Luy’s example and achievements in production are the motivation for people in the area to strive to improve themselves,” Mr. Nguyen Van Toan shared.
