Vietnamese businesses face difficulties due to strict standards of the Halal market

On the morning of August 7, the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) coordinated with the Malaysian diplomatic and trade agency in Ho Chi Minh City to organize a workshop on "Prospects for exporting to the Halal market through the Malaysian gateway in 2025".

According to the Organizing Committee, the Halal industry is an industry that provides products and services that meet standards for Muslims, including food - beverages, tourism, seafood, etc. Currently, this industry is growing, as there are more than 2 billion Muslims in the world . This is an opportunity for Vietnamese poultry products to expand their export markets.

In her opening speech, Ms. Ho Thi Quyen - Deputy Director of ITPC said that Malaysia and Vietnam have great potential for cooperation in the field of Halal food. Malaysia's Halal standards have been recognized worldwide.

Therefore, Vietnam has recognized the National Halal Certification Center (HALCERT) under the Ministry of Science and Technology , as a focal point for Halal in Vietnam with experts in this field.

However, according to Ms. Ho Thi Quyen, in reality, the number of units with the function of granting Halal certificates in Vietnam is still small, and the cost is quite high for small and medium enterprises.

On the other hand, some requirements are difficult to implement in Vietnam, such as the requirement that a Muslim must supervise the production process, making obtaining Halal certification to export goods to Muslim markets a big challenge for Vietnamese businesses.

From this reality, Dr. Phu Van Han, General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Ethnology and Anthropology, emphasized that the Project "Strengthening international cooperation to build and develop Vietnam's Halal industry by 2030" issued by the Prime Minister in 2023 is considered a strategic step to enhance national competitiveness, making Vietnam a reliable center in the global Halal value chain and taking advantage of incentives from more than 15 signed free trade agreements (FTAs).

At the workshop, Ms. Zaimah Osman - Commercial Consul, Malaysia Trade Promotion Agency in Ho Chi Minh City (MATRADE) announced updated information on Malaysia's trade capacity and strengths, and affirmed her commitment to strengthening bilateral economic cooperation with Vietnam.

To support Vietnamese businesses in connecting and cooperating, MATRADE has a global network of 48 offices, including representative offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Ms. Shariza binti Abdul Rasheed, Halal Product Manager - Maybank Malaysia, commented that market opportunities are opening up for Vietnamese businesses with the global Halal market size forecast to reach 5 trillion USD by 2030. The Halal market in Malaysia alone, one of the important gateways, is expected to reach a value of 113.2 billion USD.

Vietnamese businesses can now bring their Halal-certified products to Malaysia’s first Halal B2B e-commerce platform, Salaam Market. In addition, business matching programs will introduce Vietnamese manufacturers to local suppliers and partners to complete the Halal supply chain.

According to the General Department of Customs, in the first 6 months of 2025, the total import and export turnover between Vietnam and Malaysia is estimated to reach 7.7 billion USD, an increase of 6% over the same period in 2024. Vietnam's main export products to the Malaysian market include machinery, equipment and spare parts; computers; electronics and components; iron and steel of all kinds; petroleum, chemicals, etc.

Both countries are working towards the target of bilateral trade turnover reaching 25 billion USD by 2030.
