In his new book War , renowned American journalist Bob Woodward said that President Putin and former President Trump may have spoken on the phone seven times since Trump left office in January 2021.

"No, this is not true," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 9, according to TASS.

Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump met in Japan in June 2019.

According to an excerpt from the book published by The Washington Post on October 8, Mr. Woodward said that Mr. Trump maintained a personal relationship with Mr. Putin while running for another term.

The journalist also said that while he was president, Mr. Trump secretly sent Covid-19 test kits to Mr. Putin.

Steven Cheung, communications director for Mr Trump's re-election campaign, also denied the reports. "None of the stories that Bob Woodward has made up are true," Cheung said.

Mr. Jason Miller, a senior adviser to Mr. Trump's campaign, also said he had never heard of the former president and Mr. Putin calling each other.

On the other hand, on October 9, Russia also criticized US Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr. Trump's election opponent, for her criticism, according to AFP.

In an interview aired on October 7, Ms. Harris said that if elected president, she would not meet Mr. Putin for peace talks without a representative from Ukraine.

She also criticized Mr Trump's policy towards Ukraine as "capitulating" to Moscow. According to the Democratic candidate, if Mr Trump were still president, "Mr Putin would be sitting in Kyiv now".

In a response on social media, the Russian Embassy in the US criticized Ms Harris's "recent unacceptable statements", without specifying what comments she made. Moscow said the comments showed "the anger and impotence of the Washington authorities".
