The 2025 Hanoi 10th grade English entrance exam has a similar structure to the reference exam announced by the Departmentof Education and Training, closely following the orientation of assessing language proficiency in a practical and flexible manner.
According to teachers of the HOCMAI Education System, the proposal includes a number of new types of exercises such as: identifying signs, arranging paragraphs, reading and filling in short notices, and reading comprehension and matching, showing a clear effort in approaching a modern way of testing and evaluating English proficiency, in line with the orientation of the new general education program.
Master Do Thi Tra Mi, Head of the English Department at Hoa - La Trobe High School, Hanoi, also said that the exam has a new format: Choose a topic sentence for a paragraph, arrange the paragraph to create a meaningful text, and fill in sentences/phrases to complete the paragraph.
“These changes show that the exam orientation is shifting from testing memorization to assessing language proficiency, helping students better prepare for learning English at high school level, in line with the spirit of the 2018 General Education Program,” commented Master Do Thi Tra Mi.

Regarding the structure and scope of knowledge of the exam, it is generally kept stable and reasonable with 40 multiple choice questions, 60 minutes of test time, including a variety of knowledge and skills such as: phonetics, vocabulary - grammar - communication functions, reading skills: reading comprehension and reading to fill in words, fill in phrases/sentences, fill in advertising information, announcements, writing skills in the form of choosing sentences with similar meanings, combining sentences.
According to teachers, this structure is familiar to students during the review process, while still ensuring a comprehensive assessment of students' language abilities.
The test content also includes practical application elements such as: everyday communication contexts integrated into conversations, reading warning signs, filling in information in notices, etc., so students need to understand the context to choose the correct answer.
The test is differentiated at 3 levels: Recognition - Understanding - Application. Most of the questions are at the recognition and understanding levels, helping average to good students to complete about 60-70% of the test content.
High-level application questions appear more often in reading comprehension passages in the form of inference questions, finding information not mentioned in the passage, and vocabulary questions that require contextual elements for inference.
Overall, the exam ensures the necessary differentiation to serve admission to schools with high entry requirements, but still does not put too much pressure on the majority of students.
“With this exam, it is expected that many candidates will get 8-9 points, but there will not be many 10 points,” HOCMAI teacher predicted.
Sharing the same opinion, Master Do Thi Tra Mi commented that many questions are in the form of recognition, testing general knowledge (tenses, vocabulary, relative clauses...), reading comprehension is relatively easy, not challenging. However, to achieve a score of 9 or higher, candidates need to have a firm grasp of advanced vocabulary, have logical thinking to complete exercises such as arranging sentences into paragraphs, choosing appropriate concluding sentences, filling in sentences in complete paragraphs,...
