South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee and President Yoon Suk Yeol attend an event in Seoul on October 1, 2024.

The Hankook Ilbo newspaper, citing informed sources, revealed that the CIO has instructed the Seoul Detention Center to prohibit visits to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for non-legal purposes. The reason is to prevent the possibility of evidence tampering.

As a result, First Lady Kim Keon Hee was also banned from visiting her husband. However, the CIO did not restrict the receiving and sending of letters.

Similar restrictions were imposed on former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who was arrested last month on charges related to President Yoon’s imposition of martial law. Kim filed a petition with the Seoul Central District Court asking for non-legal visitation, but the court rejected the request on January 7.

Also on the same day, the president's representative lawyer announced that Mr. Yoon refused to participate in the interrogation summoned by the CIO on January 20, according to The Korea Times .

In response to the above information, the CIO said it is seriously considering strong measures to force President Yoon to question him because he continues to refuse to cooperate with the investigation.

"We do not rule out the possibility of going to the detention center for questioning and are also considering it," The Korea Times quoted a CIO official as saying.

Mr. Yoon will be detained until January 28, and in case the court extends the extension, he will continue to be detained until February 7.
