John Lennon's Lost Guitar from the 1960s Up for Auction

Auction house Julien's Auctions said John Lennon played the guitar on The Beatles' 1965 album Help! The guitar had been in the attic and was discovered by the current owner during a move, and is expected to exceed its original estimate of $600,000-$800,000.

The founders of US-based Julien's Auctions confirmed they went to the UK to verify the guitar and found the guitar's case, made by Maton (Australia), in the bin.

Martin Nolan, CEO and co-founder of Julien's Auctions, said the guitar came to the auction house through British musician Gordon Waller, a member of the early 1960s pop duo Peter and Gordon. According to Nolan, Gordon was given the guitar by John Lennon, who then gave it to his manager, where it has remained all these years.

The guitar will be auctioned on May 29 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York and on the Julien's Auctions website.

Beatles musical instruments have sold for high prices at auction before. In 2015, a guitar stolen from John Lennon in the early 1960s sold for $2.4 million at an auction in California.
