Rescued 2 people bitten by red-tailed green pit viper in time

On October 1, Mr. Huynh Van Khai, Director of SOS Phu Quoc Clinic ( Kien Giang ), said that the clinic had just saved two patients bitten by red-tailed green pit vipers.

Specifically, at around 8pm on September 30, Mr. HVL (43 years old, residing in Cua Can commune, Phu Quoc city) came to the SOS clinic with pain and swelling in the bite wound on his finger due to a red-tailed green pit viper bite. Mr. L. said that he was bitten by the snake at around 5pm that same day while working as a bricklayer.

Previously, at around 7 p.m. on September 29, Mr. LHN (47 years old, residing in Duong Dong Ward, Phu Quoc City) came to the SOS clinic with pain and swelling in the bite on his left foot. Mr. N. said he was bitten by a snake on his way home from work and when he arrived at the clinic, he carefully brought along the snake that had been crushed to death.

After receiving the patient, the doctors examined and determined that the bite was caused by a red-tailed green pit viper. Immediately afterwards, staff from the SOS Phu Quoc Clinic went to Dong Tam 2 Snake Farm (Duong To Commune, Phu Quoc City) to get serum to inject into the patient. The patient was then kept in the clinic for monitoring until his health was stable before being allowed to go home.

Speaking to Thanh Nien reporters, the manager of Dong Tam 2 Snake Farm said that recently the unit has provided a lot of antivenom serum to the SOS clinic, and also organized training for the medical team. In particular, if the doctors cannot identify the bite, the snake farm will help identify and determine which snake species the bite is from in order to provide the correct serum for the patient.

As for Phu Quoc City Medical Center, Dr. Le Cong Linh, Director of the Center, said that due to many procedures, the center does not have serum available to serve the people.

"In addition to the procedures, including bidding procedures, quantity, and the expiry date of the serum, we cannot buy or borrow serum to keep in stock, while the unit cannot buy individual vials to use when needed," said Dr. Linh. Dr. Linh added that private clinics can buy individual vials or borrow a few vials to keep in stock at the clinic.
