In 2025, the “Knowledge Icebreaker” voyage will take place to mark the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry and the 500th anniversary of the Northern Sea Route in the Arctic Ocean. 46 Russian and 20 international students representing 20 countries passed the competition to be selected to participate in the voyage.
Winning a high prize in the “Nuclear Energy for Peace” contest, Nguyen Nam Son, a 10C student at Tran Phu High School in Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, is the only representative of Vietnam to participate in the “Breaking the Ice of Knowledge” Arctic exploration trip. This is an opportunity for him to explore new lands, while also demonstrating the desire to seek knowledge and conquer the world of Vietnamese youth.
The “Fifty Years of Victory” is the eighth nuclear icebreaker built by the Baltic Shipyard, part of the Russian Federal Nuclear Energy Corporation. It is the most complete version of the historic icebreaker “Artika” - the ship that brought Russian and international scientists to the Arctic more than half a century ago.
Launched in 1993, the ship is over 159m long, over 30m wide, has a spoon-shaped bow design for effective icebreaking, is equipped with two nuclear reactors, reaches a maximum speed of 21.4 knots (39.6 km/h) and is capable of breaking ice up to 5m thick. Modern digital control systems, nuclear safety and biological protection ensure that all operations comply with the standards of the Russian State Technical Supervision Service.
In addition to its role as a routefinder for cargo ships on the Northern Sea Route, “Fifty Years of Victory” also serves scientific and tourist expeditions, contributing to the sustainable development of the polar region.
