On the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, July 27, looking back, there are some slices of the lives of soldiers in the past that make many people cry. In the journey "Bringing happiness to share with the community" of Vietnamese Family Warmth, one of the humane programs sponsored by Hoa Sen Home Construction Materials and Interior Supermarket System ( Hoa Sen Group ) and Hoa Sen Plastic Pipe - Source of happiness , the program encountered many situations of people who had devoted their youth to the Fatherland. They are veterans, wounded soldiers, people who carry memories of war, but at the same time are also a lasting, loving support for their families today.
One leg was left on the battlefield, the other he used to continue walking for the future of his grandchildren.
The first situation to mention is the family of Thai Nguyen Gia Khanh (12 years old) in Vinh Long province (formerly Ben Tre province) in episode 107 of Vietnamese Family Home. He lives with his grandparents in a very deprived situation when his father passed away in 2019 and his mother remarried in 2021.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, Khanh’s maternal grandfather (63 years old), is a veteran who fought in the war to keep the country at peace and lost a leg. Now, he works as a fisherman in the river to support his family. With his legs no longer intact, some days Mr. Tung can only catch and sell a few tens of thousands of dong, some days he only has enough fish to get through a meal. The monthly allowance of 3 million dong for war invalids is the only source of income left. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Be, Gia Khanh’s maternal grandmother, suffered from a stroke many years ago, is no longer lucid and cannot work.
Gia Khanh, despite his young age, knew how to help his grandfather with housework, cook, study hard, and walk to school many kilometers away. The image of the little boy standing next to his grandfather with gray hair and limping legs due to war wounds made many people unable to hold back their tears.
The love of his grandfather, veteran Nguyen Van Tung, is not noisy, not ostentatious, but quiet like the river in his hometown where he still rows his boat to cast his net every day. Although he only had one leg after the war, he still struggled to make a living, braving the sun and rain in the river to earn every fish, every penny to raise his grandchildren and take care of his sick wife. The prosthetic leg may make walking more difficult, but it has never made Mr. Tung falter. The calloused hands and limping gait of Gia Khanh's grandfather are proof of the tireless sacrifice of the soldier of the past, who is still the silent hero of the small family.
Mr. Tung loved Gia Khanh with his teachings and simple meals filled with love. That love was the warm fire that nurtured Gia Khanh's strength during the days when he lacked parental love.
The only thing he had left was love and he used it to nurture another life.
The next situation to mention is the family of Ha Thi Thu Na (17 years old), in Ha Tinh province in episode 125 of Vietnamese Family Home. Never feeling the love of her father, Na lived with her mother and grew up under the care of her grandparents.
If the youth of Mr. Ha Van Duyen, Thu Na's maternal grandfather (80 years old) was filled with war and war, wearing the uniform of a soldier to protect the Fatherland, then his later life was filled with days of silent sacrifice for his children and grandchildren. Having served in the army from 1964 to 1976, after returning to his homeland, he discovered that he had been infected with Agent Orange, a war legacy that caused his health to decline and left an impact on his daughter, Ms. Ha Thi Phuong, who was born with a congenital intellectual disability, and her mental state was unstable, so the whole family did not know who Thu Na's father was.
Loving their children and grandchildren, Mr. Duyen and his wife have spent their whole lives working hard to provide food and clothing for their daughter and granddaughter. Not only raising them, they are also a strong spiritual support, taking care of every expense, protecting Ms. Phuong from risks in life. The monthly allowance Ms. Phuong receives is 1.7 million VND, Mr. Duyen saves every penny, carefully preserving it so that the mother and daughter do not lack meals, so that his granddaughter can continue to go to school.
Despite his old age and poor health, Mr. Duyen still follows his granddaughter's every step. He hopes Thu Na will grow up to escape poverty and become a moral and cultured person. When her health no longer allows, the couple is forced to move in with their son nearby, so that Thu Na and her mother can learn to be independent, but they still silently follow as a way to prepare for the future when they are no longer around.
Thanks to her hard work and good behavior, Thu Na receives a scholarship of 1 million VND every year. She also does not have to pay tuition fees, so she always saves to buy school supplies. Thu Na knows that she is the spiritual support for her mother and also the future breadwinner of the family, so she always reminds herself to be more independent and mature to be able to take care of her mother and grandparents.
Having devoted himself to the country when he was young, Mr. Duyen still silently shouldered the burden of his family with love and responsibility when he was old. In the small house in the middle of the Ha Tinh countryside, the image of a grandfather with gray hair and dim eyes but a heart that is always warm for his children and grandchildren is visible.
That love has given them hope, helped them overcome the pain and gradually stabilize their lives.
These situations are just a few small slices among countless untold stories about people who devoted their youth to the independence of the country and their old age to taking care of the word "family". At the Vietnamese Family Home, two families received support from the program, benefactors, and artists to help ease their pain, dry their tears, and help them have confidence to rise up in life.
For over 3 years, the Vietnamese Family Warmth Program has always strived to become an extension of the community’s love to those in difficult circumstances, including the families of those who have contributed to the country. So that each home is not only warm in material terms, but also forever shines the spirit of “The whole leaves cover the torn leaves” and “When drinking water, remember the source” of the Vietnamese people.
Hoa Sen Home Construction Materials and Interior Supermarket System (Hoa Sen Group) - accompanying that humanitarian journey, has always persistently carried out the mission of "sharing happiness with the community" , contributing to spreading the value of love to everyone.
