By 2025, the total area converted from rice cultivation to other crops, rice cultivation combined with aquaculture is estimated to be 38,700 hectares, of which the Mekong Delta is 38,200 hectares. The main crops are: 30,500 hectares of annual crops, 10,900 hectares of pasture, 5,800 hectares of rice cultivation combined with aquaculture, 2,400 hectares of perennial crops and 74.8 hectares of other crops.

However, the conversion area is still spontaneous and not linked to the general plan. Some crops when converted have poor competitive advantages, product output is not stable due to small-scale production; there is a lack of connection with enterprises that consume products, not ensuring sustainable consumption. The policy to encourage conversion of crops on rice land has not been strongly implemented. Infrastructure mainly serves rice production, so the conversion to other crops does not meet the requirements, low efficiency...

The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection recommends that localities review the area of ​​each crop according to ecological sub-regions: areas likely to be affected by drought and lack of irrigation water should switch to dry crops or shift the planting season to avoid damage due to lack of fresh water and saltwater intrusion; areas with irrigation water when changing color, focus on investing in intensive cultivation of high-efficiency crops.
