Compete in national tournaments
The Vietnamese Sports Delegation is expected to attend the 33rd SEA Games with more than 1,000 members, including athletes, coaches, experts, officials and doctors competing in 45 out of 66 sports and sub-sports at the Games. Facing challenges from host Thailand and other regional rivals, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation aims to finish in the top 3, instead of maintaining the No. 1 position like the previous two Games.
Although the quota has been lowered to a more “affordable” level, the sports competing in the SEA Games have not relaxed their efforts to recruit high-quality personnel. With only 6 months left until the competition, many sports have begun recruiting, selecting or zoning athletes during this period.

For kickboxing, the 2025 national championship is an opportunity for coaches and experts to evaluate professional quality, review the force, and prepare for the 33rd SEA Games. Mr. Dam Cong Dien - in charge of boxing and kickboxing (Vietnam Sports Administration) emphasized that the outstanding players in this tournament will be called up to the national team, starting to gather from July 1 to December 31 to prepare for the regional arena.
From the national championship, kickboxing witnessed the brilliance of many athletes such as Huynh Van Tuan (Ho Chi Minh City), Nguyen Quang Huy, Trieu Thi Phuong Thuy ( Hanoi ) or Bui Thi Yen Nhi (Hau Giang)... These will be the faces expected to join the national kickboxing team to compete at the 33rd SEA Games.
In another sport, triathlon, the 2025 National Club Championship has just concluded in Ba Ria - Vung Tau . The leading athletes of modern triathlon in Vietnam for triathlon (swimming - cycling - running), duathlon (cycling - running - cycling), aquathlon (swimming - running) are still maintaining their form. These include Pham Tien San (duathlon), Vu Dinh Duan (triathlon, aquathlon), Nguyen Thi Kim Cuong (triathlon, aquathlon), Nguyen Thi Phuong Trinh (triathlon, duathlon), Nguyen Thi Thuy Van (duathlon) ... They continue to take the leading position in their events when competing in this tournament.
Two months ago, these athletes also participated in the 2025 National Triathlon Championship in Ha Nam. Through these tournaments, the professional coaches have a better understanding of the abilities and competition opportunities of the team. "All those who have achieved results in the national tournament will be selected for the team to compete in Thailand at the end of this year," said Ms. Nguyen Thu Phuong - in charge of the triathlon department (Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department).
Taekwondo, athletics calculate "hunting" for Gold Medal
Like kickboxing or triathlon, taekwondo will hold two major tournaments in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of June. One is the national tournament taking place from June 21 to 25. The other is the international tournament starting from June 27 to 28. According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy - Vice President and General Secretary of VTF, through the above two tournaments, a list of excellent athletes will be selected, from which the Vietnamese taekwondo team will be established to participate in the 33rd SEA Games.
Currently, Vietnamese taekwondo still puts its trust in some key players such as Bac Thi Khiem, Kim Tuyen, Anh Tuyet. These athletes still maintain their form and are confident in aiming to "hunt" for gold at the regional sports festival. In addition, Vietnamese taekwondo also hopes to find new factors through the two national and international tournaments mentioned above. Previously, Vietnamese taekwondo achieved impressive results at the SEA Games, especially at the 31st and 32nd SEA Games. At the 31st SEA Games, the Vietnamese taekwondo team excellently won the first place overall with 9 gold medals, surpassing Thailand (5 gold medals). At the 32nd SEA Games, although only aiming for 4 gold medals, the Vietnamese taekwondo team still achieved impressive results with 4 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 3 bronze medals.
Athletics is also a sport that Vietnamese Sports has high expectations for. Mr. Nguyen Duc Nguyen, in charge of the Athletics Department (Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department) - said that on June 20, 11 members of the Vietnamese athletics team left for Thailand to compete. He said: "The 2025 Thailand International Athletics Championship will be the basis for testing the performance index of a number of athletes. This participation is also the last international mission in the process of accumulating expertise to participate in the 33rd SEA Games".
In preparation for the 33rd SEA Games, the Athletics Department (Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department) and the Vietnam Athletics Federation focused on sending athletes from professional teams to compete internationally to get a feel for the competition. In particular, the managers identified the first 6 months of the year as a period to check and review the training process.
Therefore, the Vietnamese athletics team has sent athletes from many professional groups to participate in international tournaments including the 2025 Asian Youth Championship (U18 age group), the 2025 Singapore Open Athletics Championship, the 2025 Hong Kong (China) Open Athletics Championship, the 2025 Taiwan (China) Open Athletics Championship, and the 2025 Asian Athletics Championship. Now, the 2025 Thailand International Athletics Championship is the remaining international task in the athlete performance testing program.
Notably, for the women's 4x400m event alone, athletes including Quach Thi Lan, Nguyen Thi Hang, Hoang Thi Minh Hanh, and Nguyen Thi Ngoc will have the opportunity to train for a long time abroad. This event is also targeted to compete for a gold medal at the SEA Games and win a medal at the 20th ASIAD in 2026.
