US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says a US government shutdown would be a gift to President Donald Trump.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-Calif.) said he would vote to keep the government open, according to Fox News. He warned that a government shutdown would be worse for the American people and would only empower President Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer at the Capitol in Washington DC on March 13.
"I believe it is my duty to make the best choice for the country to minimize harm to the American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open, not shut it down," Mr. Schumer said in the Senate on March 13.
Democrats have criticized Republicans for their hesitation in passing a government spending bill, while Democrats are also struggling with a situation that could lead to a US government shutdown, according to Fox News.
Previously, The Hill newspaper on March 13 quoted Democratic senators saying they would not vote in favor of the 6-month budget bill submitted by the House of Representatives, which would increase defense spending and reduce other programs.
Democrats say the bill is partisan and that Republicans did not consult with Democratic lawmakers in Congress . Democrats are demanding that they first vote on a temporary bill to fund the government for 30 days.
However, the House of Representatives is currently in recess until March 24, so even if the Senate passes a temporary spending bill, there is no guarantee that it will be passed by the House on time. And so, the Democratic senators themselves do not have many options, according to The Hill . If no spending bill is finalized, the US government will have to shut down from March 15.
