Vietnamese ginseng (SVN) has the scientific name Panax Vietnamensis Ha & Grushv. is one of 12 species of the genus Panax, family Araliaceae, first discovered in nature in Ngoc Linh mountain area of Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces in 1973 and was officially fully recorded in terms of botanical identification in 1985.

Up to now, Vietnamese ginseng has been discovered in many different localities. Besides Quang Nam and Kon Tum, there are also Lam Dong, Lai Chau ...

Up to now, in Vietnam, there have been collected and identified 3 types of Panax Vietnamensis, including: Ngoc Linh ginseng, Lai Chau ginseng, Langbiang ginseng.

Many scientific studies have proven that Vietnamese ginseng has good chemical composition and pharmacological effects and is not inferior to other precious ginseng species in the world.

As an endemic species, a very rare medicinal herb of the country, Vietnamese ginseng has been included in the list of national products by the Government since 2017. This is a great advantage for the development of health care products for humans and products from Vietnamese ginseng that are competitive in the domestic and international markets.

Up to now, Vietnamese ginseng has been successfully bred, grown and developed to serve the development of health care products for Vietnamese people, and has contributed to the economic development and social security of some localities, typically Quang Nam, Kon Tum and Lai Chau.

Lai Chau focuses on developing ginseng, a local strength.

At the scientific workshop "Quality standards of medicinal ginseng (Panax spp) and health care products from ginseng" recently organized by the Vietnam - Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST), Deputy Minister of Science and Technology (MOST) Bui The Duy said that in recent times, the MOST has made certain investments and attention to Vietnamese ginseng, demonstrated through the protection of geographical indications for Ngoc Linh ginseng, the deployment of research institutes and research centers on Ngoc Linh ginseng in Kon Tum, support for ginseng quality verification, as well as state management activities to ensure ginseng quality, fight against counterfeit goods, put Vietnamese ginseng in the list of national products to prioritize research and development...

In recent years, with the help of Korean experts, VKIST has had initial success in transferring technology to domestic enterprises, especially towards high-content medicinal herb extraction technology.

The workshop was to bring the best technological solutions and most useful lessons of Korean ginseng to Vietnamese ginseng. Through that, research projects, technology transfer, and production cooperation projects were created.

Many experts believe that if Vietnamese ginseng is to compete with other ginseng species on the market, it needs to have clear, modern and reliable quality standards.

The first Lai Chau Ginseng Garden is certified to meet organic standards.
