Many Vietnamese students attended the seminar on studying in Korea on September 16.
Korean universityeducation is evaluated annually.
In 2023, there were 43,631 Vietnamese studying in Korea, accounting for about 23.8% of the number of international students living and studying in this country. This is the data presented by Mr. Shin Choong Il , Consul General of Korea in Ho Chi Minh City, at the seminar on studying in Korea on the morning of September 16 at the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City.
"Similar to Vietnam, Korea is a country that pays great attention to and invests in education. In particular, more and more Vietnamese students are choosing Korea as a study abroad destination and developing into global talents," said Mr. Shin Choong Il .
According to Mr. Shin Choong Il , the Korean Ministry of Education regularly manages universities to ensure the quality of education. This process will be conducted annually, including evaluating universities that receive financial support from the government, and evaluating the system of certifying the internationalization of education capacity. According to international reports, Korea is also the safest environment in the world and has an economy in the top 10 of the world.
Mr. Shin Choong Il , Consul General of Korea in Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that Korean universities are always evaluated annually.
Mr. Shin Choong Il also quoted the statement of South Korean President Yoon Seok Yeol when he visited Vietnam in June 2022 that he would support exchanges for future generations between Vietnam and South Korea. "The exchange of future generations will become the foundation for further development of the bilateral relationship in the future," Mr. Yoon Seok Yeol shared at that time.
Vietnamese international students benefit from many new policies
The trend of studying abroad in Korea is growing in Vietnam, partly due to the fact that the Korean government is "expanding" many policies in the field of international education. Specifically, Ms. Ho Thi Kim Ly, Director of YK Education, said that the Korean Ministry of Justice recently accepted temporary high school graduation certificates for Vietnamese students who have just graduated, instead of requiring an official diploma.
"This allows Vietnamese students to register to study in Korea in the upcoming winter semester, which is December 2023. However, you should note that the new regulation is only effective until October 31 and it is not known whether it will be extended. The reason may be because Korea assumes that after October 31, you will all have an official high school diploma, so you do not need to accept a temporary certificate anymore," Ms. Ly explained.
Ms. Ho Thi Kim Ly, Director of YK Education, acknowledged that the Korean government is creating many favorable conditions for Vietnamese international students.
According to the female director, a new "bright spot" for Vietnamese students studying in Korea is that from September this year, the government of this country officially increased the duration of the post-graduation work visa (D10) for all majors to 3 years instead of 2 years as before.
Sharing more, Ms. Bui Thi Tam, General Director of YT KOREA Co., Ltd., said that Korea has applied a new type of visa in areas that need to attract human resources (F2-R) in 2023, helping Vietnamese students to increase their working time by up to 5 years. This visa mostly prioritizes rural areas, but can also be applied in big cities. For example, Busan, the second largest city in Korea, has three districts that allow international students to switch to this visa.
"Compared to before, the Korean government also has more incentives for international students after graduation. For example, the high-skilled technical visa (E7) used to be limited to certain technical majors, but now it has expanded to many other majors. In addition, Vietnamese international students can also switch to a general labor visa (E9) to work," Ms. Tam shared.
Ms. Bui Thi Tam, General Director of YT KOREA Co., Ltd., believes that Vietnamese international students have more job opportunities after graduation.
In addition, the female director said that Korea has changed the minimum requirement for financial proof since June 2023. From having a savings balance of 10,000 USD (240 million VND) for Korean language courses, now Vietnamese international students only need 10 million won (182 million VND) when registering to study at schools in Seoul, and 8 million won (145 million VND) for schools in other regions.
"This is a policy to attract international students in the context of Korea's declining population, leading to a decrease in local students, causing schools to lack students," Ms. Tam further explained.
