The liver not only helps the body filter toxins but also participates in many important processes such as protein production, supporting digestion and nutrient metabolism, according to the health site Onlymyhealth (India).
Therefore, keeping the liver healthy is essential to maintain overall health. Dr. Bhumesh Tyagi, an internist in India, shares foods that help keep the liver healthy.
Drinking coffee is good for the liver
According to research, drinking coffee is beneficial for the liver. Specifically, coffee helps prevent cirrhosis, reduces the risk of liver cancer, and limits inflammation and liver damage. These benefits come from compounds such as chlorogenic acid and cafestol, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
However, Mr. Tyagi recommends drinking black coffee, limiting sugar and cream so as not to reduce the beneficial effects on the liver.
Green tea
Green tea is rich in catechins, a natural antioxidant that helps improve liver enzymes, reduce oxidative stress and limit fat accumulation in the liver.
According to Mr. Tyagi, drinking green tea regularly can help prevent liver diseases, especially non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Berries
Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries are all rich in anthocyanins, antioxidants that help reduce inflammation, protect liver cells from damage, and improve liver function.
Cabbage
Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts are all good for your liver. They contain glucosinolates, compounds that help your liver increase its production of detoxifying enzymes.
Garlic
Garlic is a familiar food in Vietnamese kitchens. But few people know that garlic contains allicin and selenium, two active ingredients that help purify the liver and protect liver cells from oxidative stress.
Garlic can also stimulate liver enzyme activity, helping the detoxification process take place more effectively.
Nuts
Almonds, walnuts and nuts in general contain healthy fats, vitamin E and antioxidants.
These nutrients help reduce inflammation, fight oxidation and improve liver enzymes. However, users should note to eat in moderation because seeds are high in calories.
Oatmeal
Oats, rich in soluble fiber, help aid digestion, reduce toxins, improve blood sugar and prevent fatty liver.
In addition to a healthy diet, Mr. Tyagi emphasized that a healthy liver requires a healthy lifestyle. Accordingly, you should limit alcohol, maintain a reasonable weight, exercise regularly, drink enough water and avoid processed foods.
