(CLO) A shark attack in the Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam, Egypt, injured a foreign tourist, according to an announcement from the Egyptian Ministry of Environment on Sunday.

The attack occurred in deep water, outside the designated swimming area at Marsa Alam. The injured were taken to Porto Ghalib Hospital for treatment. An emergency committee has been set up to investigate the incident, the environment ministry said, but the identities and nationalities of the victims have not been released.

The area has seen a number of similar shark attacks in recent years. Last year, a fatal shark attack occurred in Hurghada, another popular tourist city on Egypt's east coast, prompting authorities to close some nearby beaches.

In addition to the incident in Egypt, another fatal shark attack was also recorded over the weekend in Australia. The victim was Luke Walford, 40, a pastor, who was attacked by a shark while fishing in the water with his family at Humpy Island, near the Great Keppel Island area of the Keppel Bay Islands National Park of the Great Barrier Reef.

Queensland Police said the incident happened at around 4:30pm (local time) on Saturday. Despite efforts by paramedics to save him, Mr Walford died about an hour and a half later.

According to a 2023 report by the Florida Museum of Natural History, the United States has the highest number of unprovoked shark bites in the world , with 36 recorded cases, followed by Australia with 15. Of the fatalities, the majority were due to white shark bites.
