On the evening of September 2, a 40-year-old pregnant woman living in Quang Ninh was admitted to the hospital in labor at 41 weeks, her fifth birth, head-first position, large size, and a history of gestational diabetes.
After examination, doctors from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Cam Pha Regional General Hospital determined that this was a high-risk case and decided to perform an emergency cesarean section. The surgery took place overnight, and the baby was born weighing 6.2 kg - a record for the hospital.
Immediately after birth, the baby showed signs of wheezing and slight purple lips and extremities, so he was transferred to the Pediatrics Department for close monitoring. By the morning of September 3, the mother and baby were in stable condition. The baby's health continues to improve and is being supported at the Pediatrics Department.
According to the doctor, during pregnancy, the pregnant woman was diagnosed with gestational diabetes but not fully following specialist instructions, leading to excessive fetal growth. This condition increases the risk of complications during birth and affects the long-term health of the child.
This is not an isolated case. In 2022, Bac Ninh General Hospital recorded a case of a baby girl weighing 6.2 kg. The mother was admitted to the hospital at 39 weeks and 4 days of pregnancy, with abdominal pain and labor. After consultation, the doctors decided to perform an emergency cesarean section because the mother had a history of cesarean section, a large fetus, and preeclampsia
Obstetricians recommend that with large fetuses, pregnant women need to be closely monitored through regular check-ups, maintain a reasonable diet, limit starch and sugar, increase green vegetables and exercise appropriately.
In particular, pregnant women need to comply with treatment if diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure pregnancy, to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. In case of pregnancy after the due date or showing abnormal signs, go to the hospital for timely treatment.
