Keeping up with digital technology

I have been in the journalism industry for nearly 30 years. Long enough to witness the changes in the journalism and media industry as an insider.

At the Quang Nam Newspaper editorial office today, writing articles on a computer and then sending emails to the editorial office is “old-fashioned”. The Quang Nam Newspaper’s converged editorial system, which has been in operation since February 3, 2024, can be said to be a fairly modern journalism model in the national press system.

From data entry, editing, layout, publishing approval to royalty payment, everything is done in a digital environment. Quang Nam Newspaper has strongly integrated into the digital transformation of journalism, so journalists of course cannot stay out of it.

Access to technology

From handwritten manuscripts in the early days of the profession to working in today’s converged newsroom space; from manual layout to computer design; from printed issues published every other day to online news updated every second on electronic newspapers and social networks… are great changes in journalism. These changes require journalists to study and self-study every day to keep up with modern journalism trends.

At first, the concepts of big data, AI, chatGPT, blockchain, digital transformation... were quite vague and abstract for someone in his 50s like me. At that time, I thought that people my age would have difficulty keeping up with changes in technology in general and technology in the field of journalism in particular, so applying technology was probably only for young people.

But then I thought, if I don't want to be left behind, the only way is to approach, get acquainted with, and learn technology. And perhaps never before have journalists needed to self-study, need to equip themselves with skills and knowledge like in the era of digital transformation, artificial intelligence - where everything operates by algorithms, data and technology - like now.

I registered for the “digital literacy” class at https://quangnam.onetouch.edu.vn. However, unfortunately, the program does not have any lectures in the field I am interested in, which is AI technology in the field of information and communication.

However, other courses of Quang Nam's digital literacy program such as digital transformation in education, digital economy , digital society, digital skills in state agencies, etc. attract many participants, because this is a platform built for a variety of groups of subjects including cadres, civil servants, businesses, cooperatives, communities, etc. with lectures that are easy to access and practical for many people.

Open the door to technology

Although there are no lectures in the field that I am most interested in, I also participate in “popular digital education”. Lectures on information security in digital transformation, digital transformation in state agencies… are also very useful to me.

I used to admire young colleagues who could work with just a phone, from taking photos, filming - editing - video clip editing, to writing articles, editing, publishing..., now I can do the same, although sometimes I have to ask for help from young colleagues while working.

Learn and then see, don't be afraid that AI will take over, take the place of journalists, the important thing is whether journalists are willing to learn to master technology or not. People at my age often live slowly, and also become slow in their careers.

But when I got access to technology, I suddenly felt “younger” and “faster”, especially when I could also write articles, upload, film and edit clips… with just a phone. Not to mention, the digital age also makes people flexible, dynamic, easy to share, open and constantly connected.

Get familiar with technology and new things to avoid getting “lost” in the flow of the times. Students who enter the “digital literacy” class like me, although slow, still try to join in.

Classes on technology and artificial intelligence did not teach me everything, but they opened the door so that I would not be left behind in the digital age. I think that we should not be afraid that technology will replace us, but should see technology as a companion, as an “extended arm” in all aspects of life, in journalism...
