According to 9to5Mac , Apple has just notified iPhone users about a new spyware attack, called Mercenary Spyware Attack. Potential victims have received a warning email from Apple describing how the attack can remotely infiltrate iPhones and steal personal data.

According to Reuters, the victims of this attack were identified in India and 91 other countries. Apple said it discovered that the attackers used sophisticated spyware to install on users' iPhones, allowing them to track their personal data and location.

Hackers are targeting iPhone users with new spyware

This type of attack is often carried out by criminal organizations or sponsored by governments, due to the high cost of developing spyware and the technical complexity required. The targets are often people in important positions such as political activists, government officials, diplomats and journalists.

Apple has been working to patch the vulnerabilities and release software updates to protect iPhone users. However, the company also recommends that vulnerable users take the initiative to protect themselves by installing the latest software updates immediately and consider enabling Lockdown Mode, which disables some of the iPhone system functions that are particularly vulnerable to attack.

Apple is also taking legal action against the makers of this dangerous spyware. In November 2021, Apple sued the Israeli company NSO Group, one of the most notorious spyware makers, for its role in carrying out surveillance attacks on Apple users. The lawsuit is still ongoing.
