India stresses importance of respecting UNCLOS 1982

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar expressed concern over activities that undermine peace and stability, and stressed that any code of conduct of parties in the East Sea must not prejudice the rights and interests of third parties.

According to the Hindustan News Hub website, speaking at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) within the framework of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-56) and related conferences in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on July 14, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasized the importance of respecting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and supporting ASEAN's stance in the process of determining entitlements based on this convention.

Indian diplomats have expressed concern over activities that undermine peace and stability, stressing that any code of conduct by parties in the South China Sea must not prejudice the rights and interests of third parties.

In addition, Mr. Jaishankar also appreciated the important role of ASEAN in India's Act East policy and New Delhi's broader vision for the Indo- Pacific region.

Earlier, the Indian Foreign Minister highlighted the country's response to global challenges - including promoting diplomacy to resolve conflicts, enhancing global cooperation and delegation in the fight against terrorism, and advocating for expanded access to resources to support the Global South.
