Indian defense officials said that on November 23, the pilot of an ICG Dornier aircraft noticed suspicious movements of a fishing boat near Barren Island while on routine patrol.
The ICG then launched a coordinated air and sea operation against the fishing vessel identified as Myanmarese.
Accordingly, ICG discovered and seized about 6 tons of methamphetamine packed in about 3,000 packages, each weighing 2 kg.
ICG also arrested six Myanmar nationals on the fishing boat and surmised that the methamphetamine was destined for India and neighboring countries.
This is not the first case of illegal drug trafficking being seized in the waters of India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In 2019 and 2022, similar drugs were seized from foreign vessels when they attempted to enter Indian waters.
