(NLDO) - Nine consecutive earthquakes occurred in two adjacent districts of Quang Nam and Kon Tum provinces, causing people to worry.
On January 28, the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Geophysics announced that at 9:46:08 ( Hanoi time) the same morning, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake occurred at the coordinates (14.848 degrees North latitude, 108.278 degrees East longitude), with a focal depth of about 8.1 km. The earthquake occurred in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province.

Previously, on January 27, the Institute of Geophysics also recorded 8 consecutive earthquakes occurring in Quang Nam and Kon Tum provinces. Specifically, 1 earthquake occurred in Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province; the remaining 7 occurred in Plong district, Kon Tum province. The 8 earthquakes on January 27 had magnitudes ranging from 2.7 to 3.8.
Since 2024, earthquakes have continuously occurred in Kon Plong district and Nam Tra My district (bordering each other). According to the leader of Viet Geophysics, these earthquakes are stimulated earthquakes, caused by the water storage process of hydroelectric reservoirs.
In December 2024, an earthquake in Kon Tum province caused tremors that sent dozens of large rocks rolling down the mountain into the village.
Kon Plong district is the place where many large and small hydroelectric projects are planned. Currently, there are 6 hydroelectric projects in the area, of which 3 hydroelectric projects have reservoirs: Thuong Kon Tum, Dak Drinh and Dak Re.
Notably, in early December 2024, an earthquake in Kon Plong district caused strong tremors in Nam Tra My district, causing dozens of rocks to roll down the mountain into the village, fortunately there were no casualties.
Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee later announced a landslide emergency in this area.
