Rising out of poverty from garden-forest economy
About 3km from the center of Dong Giang commune is the combined garden-forest production model of Mr. BNuong Ngang (A Duong group, Dong Giang commune).
Here, Mr. Ngang's family is growing 1.5 hectares of purple Morinda officinalis with a total of 18,000 trees, in addition to a large area of cinnamon and fruit trees planted in between. Nearby is a pen of 10 spotted deer, raised for velvet twice a year.
"Thanks to this production model, my family escaped poverty and our life has become more stable," Mr. Ngang shared.
It is known that purple Morinda officinalis roots are sold for about 400,000 VND/kg; deer antlers cost about 1.5 million VND/tael. On average, each year, his family earns more than 70 million VND from Morinda officinalis and more than 50 million VND from deer antlers.

Mr. Ngang recalls that in 2018, with the policy of encouraging farmers to develop gardens and forests in Dong Giang district (old), he registered and received support from the State for more than 3,000 purple ba kích seedlings. After 7 years of hard work learning from many places to successfully grow purple ba kích, he replicated the model for 61 households in the area with a total of 237,000 trees.
In A Duong group, the model of raising spotted deer for velvet antlers has also been expanded with 10 households participating and 50 deer supported by the State. The barns built since 2023 are gradually bringing income to the people.

I encourage people to participate in the production model; go to each garden, visit each house to guide and support people in taking care of the Morinda officinalis and deer properly. Now the lives of many households have stabilized, more than 50% of households have escaped poverty!”

Planning of medicinal plant growing areas
Mr. Coor Le, Chairman of Dong Giang Commune People's Committee, said that Dong Giang district has previously made efforts to develop economic models for households, household groups, garden economy and farm economy associated with the spirit of Resolution 35/2021/NQ-HDND of the People's Council of Quang Nam province (old) on the mechanism to support the development of garden economy and farm economy in the locality in the period of 2021 - 2025. Including specific models such as raising spotted deer, growing cinnamon and growing medicinal plants.
That spirit was continued by Dong Giang commune after the arrangement of 2-level administrative units. According to Mr. Coor Le, in the general planning of the commune, it is expected that there will be a medicinal plant growing area including: Morinda officinalis, Codonopsis pilosula, Seven-leaf One-flower ginseng... aiming to develop a typical local brand.

After the merger, mountainous communes such as Dong Giang have many conditions to connect and develop with many resources from the new Da Nang city.
Accordingly, Dong Giang commune will focus on livestock and crop farming models in groups of 2-3 households with determination to produce; create connections and support each other, aiming to replicate successful models.
"In the coming time, the commune will focus on economic development under the forest canopy, raising pigs, growing cinnamon and ginseng under the forest canopy," emphasized Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Giang Commune Coor Le.

According to the People's Committee of Dong Giang commune, the locality currently has a poverty rate of 31.3% (equivalent to 797 households) and is estimated to decrease to 24.7% (reduced by 167 households) by the end of 2025.
The implementation of economic models and production in the direction of garden - forest is an important goal of Dong Giang commune to reduce the current poverty rate. In addition, the government and people want infrastructure to be invested, roads to be upgraded to promote trade between regions.
