According to Mastercard, Ho Chi Minh City will be one of the first localities to apply an open-loop payment system on many types of public transport. People can use credit cards, debit cards or e-wallets to scan directly when taking the metro, bus, and river bus.
Metro Line 1 One Member Co., Ltd. (HURCH - operating metro line 1) said that metro line 1 will be put into operation at the end of 2024. The fleet consists of 17 trains, each with 3 cars, with a maximum capacity of 930 people.
In the first 8 months of the year, the metro served more than 12 million passengers, 1.3 times higher than the initial forecast. Ho Chi Minh City aims to have 5 more lines by 2035.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City also operates 138 bus routes with about 2,221 buses, 13,000 trips per day, serving 250,000 passengers per day. The goal is for 100% of buses to use green energy (electricity) by 2030.
In addition, the city also has a river bus route, connecting many places along the river, canals and important traffic hubs. As for public bicycles, the number of registered accounts is more than 770,000, averaging about 480 trips per day.
At the meeting, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong said: "The city is promoting digital transformation, in which cashless payment for public transport is a top priority."
After metro line 1, this system has been expanded to all buses, river buses and other types to bring convenient and safe experiences to people.
Mr. Cuong suggested that Mastercard continue to support Ho Chi Minh City in installing payment acceptance devices, developing mobile applications and implementing communications to encourage people to travel by public transport.
At the same time, we request that businesses continue to accompany us to cover 100% of terminals on all vehicles, helping people to make seamless payments with just "one touch".
"Based on the agreement at the meeting, the city continues to assign Urban Railway One Member Co., Ltd. No. 1 to be the focal point to promote cooperation with Mastercard in the coming period," said Mr. Cuong.
In the near future, all forms of public transport in Ho Chi Minh City will be equipped with digital payment acceptance devices, so that people only need to scan their cards or e-wallets to pay.
