On November 6, Sputnik quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin as saying that China and the United States will hold discussions on the implementation of international treaties on arms control and nuclear non-proliferation during bilateral consultations in Washington this week.

However, Mr. Uong Van Binh did not specify the time of the talks.

Earlier in November, the Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that Washington and Beijing would hold consultations on nuclear arms control but that did not mean starting formal negotiations on setting limits on each other's nuclear forces.

“China has always maintained close communication with nuclear powers on arms control and non-proliferation,” Wang said at a press conference when asked about details of the meeting with the US side.

The consultations will be held at the level of arms control and non-proliferation bodies, Wang said, adding that the parties will hold dialogue and "exchange views on a range of issues, including the implementation of international arms control and non-proliferation treaties."

A representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Beijing will soon inform the media about the consultations at the earliest.

The meeting of US and Chinese envoys on arms control will be held just before the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' summit in San Francisco, where US President Joe Biden is expected to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

This will be the first meeting between the two leaders at the APEC conference since the administration of former US President Barack Obama.

The talks come amid growing concerns in Washington about a three-way arms race with Beijing and Moscow.
