Previously, at around 2:20 p.m. on May 25, a task force from the Economic Police Department discovered Bao and his son delivering 120 kg of ground coffee in unlabeled plastic bags to a woman in Buon Ma Thuot City. At the time of inspection, Bao could not present invoices or documents proving the origin of the goods.

The police then conducted an emergency search of Bao's production site in Khanh Hoa province, seizing many machines, roasting and packaging equipment; 2 tons of raw materials including soybeans, sugar, colorants, flavorings and more than 1,600 bags of fake ground coffee with a total weight of nearly 1 ton.
Initially, Bao and his wife confessed to having produced more than 20 tons of fake ground coffee from the beginning of 2024 until now to sell to many provinces such as Binh Dinh, Lam Dong and Dak Lak .
Every 100kg of "powdered coffee" has only 3 - 9kg of coffee beans, the rest is soybeans and additives for color and flavor.
According to authorities, the use of fake coffee can cause digestive irritation, affect the liver and kidneys, and increase the risk of cancer if used long term. The case is currently under further investigation.
