British medical student Grace Spence Green was 22 when a rare disaster struck her.
A man hallucinating after using stimulants jumped from a high floor of the Westfield shopping center in London, England. The man fell on Green. As a result, Green was rushed to the emergency room and underwent an 8-hour spinal surgery.
Although doctors tried their best to save her, the accident crushed her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down.

Meanwhile, the man who fell on her - Amsumana Sillah Trawally (25 years old) - only suffered a broken leg. After the incident, Trawally was sentenced to 4 years in prison for causing grievous bodily harm. After serving her sentence, Trawally was deported from the UK.
As for Green, she began her journey of learning to live with a wheelchair, practicing diligently to maintain mobility in the areas of her body that were not paralyzed.
Nearly 7 years have passed since the terrible accident, Grace Spence Green (now 29 years old) has just released an autobiography called To Exist As I Am .
In the book, she shares her terrifying experience and her journey of physical and mental recovery after the incident.

Surprisingly, despite going through a terrifying life-changing event, Green now says she wouldn't change anything about her life, including the horrific event.
“Over the years, I have learned a lot from my disability. My relationships have changed a lot. But for me, I wouldn’t change anything that happened in the past, because I have learned a lot from it,” Green said.
Green said she does not resent anyone or think life has been unfair to her. As for the man who accidentally caused her accident, Green believes she saved his life, because if he had not fallen on her, he could have died falling from the high floor of the shopping center.
“This way of thinking helps me calm down and deal better with negative emotions. Things have been very difficult for me, but having come this far, I wouldn’t change anything in the past,” Green said.

Green also said that she has been with her current boyfriend for 3 years. He is her spiritual support in her journey to recovery and regaining balance in life. The two plan to get married this year.
Ten months after her accident, Green returned to medical school at King's College London in a wheelchair. In 2021, she officially graduated and began practicing medicine.
Even in his most desperate moments, Green never thought of giving up his dream of wearing a white coat to work in this profession.
Now, Green hopes to share her story widely to inspire the disabled community.
