Vietnam's mobile internet speed 'falls behind' the world

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/10/2023

According to a report by market monitoring company Ookla Speedtest, Vietnam's mobile internet speed averaged 44.13 Mbps on the download line (measured in September), down for the second consecutive month. In August, this index reached 47.08 Mbps while in July it was 48.29 Mbps. According to data from i-Speed, Vietnam's mobile internet in September reached 36.22 Mbps.

Meanwhile, the world 's average mobile internet speed increased from 43.19 Mbps (August) to 47.82 Mbps in September. "Going against" the general growth caused Vietnam to drop 9 places in the list of 141 countries and territories being monitored by Ookla for internet speed. At the end of September, Vietnam ranked 58th. The leaders were still the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and Qatar with speeds of 211.58 and 187.55 Mbps, respectively.

Ookla said the "downward" phenomenon was due to the impact of the reduction in mobile network speed of virtual network operators (MVNOs). Vietnam currently has 5 licensed virtual network operators. These units do not own the infrastructure but buy traffic from existing telecommunications service providers and then resell it to users.

To attract subscribers, MVNOs have simple registration policies, cheap mobile internet packages, and abundant high-speed capacity. However, recently these packages have been tightened, and virtual networks have been forced to stop supporting subscription registration via applications according to regulations from the Ministry of Information and Communications .

In terms of fixed broadband internet, Vietnam maintained its 46th position globally with a download speed of 94.45 Mbps in September, according to Ookla statistics.
