Practice saving: Eat wisely to be full, dress wisely to be warm!

These days, General Secretary To Lam’s article on “Practicing thrift” has been widely circulated, provoking much reflection. The General Secretary affirmed that thrift and anti-waste are two organically linked elements, two pillars to prosperity and wealth.

In an increasingly prosperous society, the spirit of thrift, seemingly simple, recalls a tradition that once created the lasting strength of each family, each community and, more broadly, the entire nation.

Generation 7X, 8X, early 9X grew up in hardship, with rice mixed with cassava, patched clothes, and folk songs as a guideline: "measure your coat according to your cloth", "be smart to keep warm". A frugal lifestyle is not just a habit, but a courage to nurture aspirations and preserve a warm home in times of scarcity.

The children of the 7X, 8X and 9X generations have now become the core workforce of modern Vietnamese society. We are nostalgic about our difficult childhoods, but we still remember the principles of saving from our ancestors, to build our own stable homes in the face of challenges.

Many beautiful, inspiring stories in everyday life are written from a persistent frugal lifestyle, such as Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc (Bau Duc) - Chairman of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group who nurtured his dream from a small carpentry workshop; many young men and women from rural areas were able to buy a house in Hanoi with a salary of 15 million/month; recently, many people are no longer unfamiliar with the "minimalism" lifestyle or "zero waste" green living, slow living.

At the national level, during the revolutionary stages, our Party and State paid special attention to the issue of practicing thrift. During the war, under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh , with his leading example, every citizen tightened their belts, fasted, and sacrificed all personal material interests to concentrate on the front line, helping to concentrate resources to liberate the country.

Entering the period of innovation and then international economic integration, deep international integration as it is today, "saving" is always integrated into many policies of the Party and State, the "slogan" of saving goes into every agency, enterprise, school... from urban to rural areas.

In particular, as Uncle Ho said, saving is not stinginess, "when it is not advisable to spend, then not even a penny should be spent. When there is something worth doing, something that is beneficial to the people and the Fatherland, then no matter how much effort or money it takes, it is still worth doing."

Realizing that, we are not surprised to see Professor Le Ngoc Thach, lecturer at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City) sending his savings book of 1 billion VND to support people affected by storm Yagi, or when the resettlement area of Nu village was built up after the storm... What remains in each person is the feeling of pride in the frugal, simple, yet humane Vietnamese lifestyle and culture.

When saving is considered a “miracle” that helped overcome hardships, its role in today’s life cannot be underestimated. A frugal lifestyle, from each individual and each family, is the foundation for a sustainable society, a prosperous and happy country.
