Robots are about to become AI maids: Know how to fold towels, arrange dishes

After demonstrating its ability to fold towels neatly and arrange packages accurately, the Figure 02 humanoid robot from the US company Figure continues to impress with a new challenge: loading dishes into the dishwasher. Thanks to the Helix artificial intelligence model, this robot can pick up, rotate and place dishes into the washing tray with care.

The Figure 02 humanoid robot from the US company Figure has made a significant step forward in performing multi-purpose tasks in the home. The Vision-Language-Action (VLA) artificial intelligence model called Helix has helped the robot take on a new job – loading dishes into the dishwasher – with incredible, unbelievably human-like skills.

For humans, loading dishes into a dishwasher is a simple task. For robots, it’s a complex challenge: Picking up dishes with your fingers, arranging them neatly, rotating them to fit in the tray, and applying just enough force to avoid slipping or breaking them.

Thanks to Helix, Figure 02 has demonstrated finger-level precision when handling dishes, even though the error is only allowed to be measured in centimeters. Not only that, the robot can handle a variety of objects – from bowls, plates to glasses – and adapts perfectly during the working process.

Previously, robots needed to be programmed specifically for each specific task. But Helix allows Figure 02 to learn directly by observing humans, allowing it to recover from collisions or errors without reprogramming.

Helix was first announced by Figure in February. In just a few months, Figure 02 has made several headlines: In June, the robot was able to sort packages on an assembly line; in July, CEO Brett Adcock shared a video of Figure 02 loading clothes into a washing machine; in August, the robot continued to fold towels on voice command and adjusted its actions on the fly.

Seemingly unrelated tasks—from stacking dishes to folding towels to sorting groceries—are all performed by the same general AI system, demonstrating its ability to expand and learn dynamically based on data, rather than relying on task-specific techniques.

Experts say that each new skill added will create a foundation for robots to adapt more diversely in the future. However, to become a true “housekeeper”, robots still need to master many other tasks such as vacuuming, taking out the trash or dusting.
