Baltic states determined never to “re-addict” to Russian energy

Lithuania, which has completely abandoned the use of Russian energy resources, will never return to buying them from Russia.

The statement was made by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda at an international forum on energy security issues held in Vilnius on April 10.

“Lithuania, which stopped importing gas, oil and electricity from Russia in 2022, will never return to this situation. Theoretically, we cannot even imagine this,” said Mr. Nauseda.

According to the leader of the Baltic state, there were statements in Europe back then that the West could not survive without Russian energy resources.

“Another winter is over. We are still alive and well,” said Mr. Nauseda, who said that Europe’s energy security should be based on green energy.

“Energy security will be better ensured by producing and supplying green energy at affordable prices. That is what we should strive for,” the Lithuanian President said.

The Baltic trio, comprising Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, are the most ardent supporters of Kiev in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and are also the most hawkish when it comes to sanctions against Moscow and the most determined in the process of weaning themselves off Russian energy.

Although the Baltic region has stopped importing Russian fossil fuels since the Kremlin launched its military campaign in Ukraine, it still relies on neighboring Russia to maintain the stability of its electricity system.

Last April, Lithuania conducted its first test disconnection from Russia's power grid to assess its ability to sever its last remaining energy link with Moscow, and to test its readiness to transition to the European grid .
