Promoting Dong Ho paintings, towards nomination as cultural heritage in need of urgent protection

Bac Ninh province requested the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to provide Dong Ho folk paintings for display at Vietnamese diplomatic missions abroad and as foreign gifts.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province Vuong Quoc Tuan has just directed relevant units to promote Dong Ho folk paintings, aiming to put "Dong Ho folk painting making" on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent protection in 2025.

In Document No. 5058/UBND-NV dated December 24, 2024, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province affirmed that in order to continue promoting Dong Ho folk paintings to international friends, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism needs to provide Dong Ho folk paintings, traditional Quan Ho costumes... to display at the Bac Ninh cultural space at the headquarters of Vietnamese diplomatic missions abroad as proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the same time, the Department provides Dong Ho folk paintings to the Central Party Office, the President's Office, the Government Office, the National Assembly Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as diplomatic gifts for the reception and working activities with international guests of Party and State leaders; researches and proposes new forms of gifts from Dong Ho folk paintings such as Catalogues, albums with explanations in different languages, and new-style Dong Ho folk painting products.

The Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province also directed the Office of the People's Committee of the province to connect and coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to synthesize the needs and proposals of Vietnamese representative agencies abroad in building a Bac Ninh cultural space to display and introduce Dong Ho folk paintings, traditional Quan Ho costumes, etc. and send them to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism for implementation.

In 2013, Dong Ho folk painting was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In 2017, Dong Ho painting began to be nationally profiled and proposed to UNESCO for inclusion in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent protection.

In March 2020, Vietnam submitted the dossier "Dong Ho folk painting craft" to UNESCO for consideration to be included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Bac Ninh province inaugurated the Dong Ho Folk Painting Conservation Center in early 2023.

Through artifacts, images, diagrams, and quotes at the Center, visitors can grasp the origin of a famous traditional profession./.
