Amid doubts about Washington's ability to continue providing military aid to Ukraine, Mr. Borrell told reporters in the United States on March 14 that his message to American policymakers was: "Whatever needs to be done, needs to be done quickly."

"The next months will be decisive. Many analysts predict a major Russian offensive this summer and Ukraine cannot wait until the results of the next US election (in November)," Reuters quoted Mr. Borrell as saying.

Mr. Borrell met with US diplomatic officials in Washington DC on March 13.

"That's true for us. We have to accelerate. We have to increase our support, do more and do it faster. That's why we are strengthening our defense industrial defense capacity. And that's true for the United States," the top EU diplomat said of Europe's efforts to prop up Ukraine.

Meanwhile, from France, President Macron warned allies that they should not impose limits on support for Kyiv, saying that European security was at risk as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine entered its third year.

US "saves" another $300 million in aid for Ukraine

As Ukraine struggles to contain its failed offensive, Macron last month left some of Paris' allies in disarray by saying that France did not rule out the possibility of Western troops being deployed in Ukraine.

In an interview with French television stations published on March 14, Mr. Macron clarified his statement. According to the leader, sending troops to Ukraine is not currently on the agenda, but Europe must keep “all options” open in case the war spreads.

"If Russia wins this war, Europe's prestige will be gone... If we decide to be weak, if today we decide not to respond, then we are choosing defeat. And I don't want that," Mr. Macron said in an interview with TF1 and France 2 television stations, according to AFP.

In the interview, Mr Macron called Russia a “rival” of France but did not use the word “enemy”. He said “if the situation worsens, we will be ready” to prevent Russia from winning, but France would “never launch an attack” in the current war.

President Putin warns the West that Russia is ready for nuclear war

In a statement after the interview, Mr Macron said Russia would not give up its territorial ambitions if it won the war in Ukraine, posing a threat to neighboring countries such as Moldova, Romania and Poland.

"Russia has become an expansionist power and it is clear that it will not stop there... If we abandon Ukraine, if we let Ukraine lose this war, Russia will certainly threaten Moldova, Romania, Poland," the French President wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
