A new study just published in the medical journal Journal of Xenobiotics , has discovered the anti-cancer power of virgin coconut oil, especially from lauric acid - an important ingredient in coconut oil.
An international study conducted by Liverpool John Moores University (UK), the University of Wuerzburg (Germany), in collaboration with scientists in India, Nigeria and Egypt, evaluated existing studies to elucidate the anti-cancer mechanisms of virgin coconut oil (VCO) and lauric acid and their ability to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy.
Virgin coconut oil is extracted by cold pressing from coconut milk, without refining, to preserve the natural components of the oil, including the lauric acid content.

Anti-cancer effects of virgin coconut oil and lauric acid
As a result, researchers have found that coconut oil is effective against many types of cancer, including: Lung, breast, colon, oral, liver, adrenal, uterine, and skin cancers.
Specifically, pure coconut oil is found to have the following effects:
- Shows promise in treating many types of cancer, including lung, breast, colon, oral, and liver.
- Has the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, especially in oral and liver cancer.
- Induces cell death in lung cancer and neuroblastoma (adrenal cancer) tumors.
- Compounds from coconut oil also enhance the effectiveness of the lung cancer chemotherapy drug methotrexate on lung cancer cells, while reducing side effects.
- Inhibits breast cancer cell proliferation and enhances the efficacy of the breast cancer chemotherapy drug trastuzumab.
- Has anti-proliferative and apoptosis-promoting effects on endometrial and breast cancer cells.
- Affects 17 proteins and pathways involved in cancer.
- Moderately inhibits the growth of skin cancer cells. Coconut oil rich in lauric acid significantly inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells and supports the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
- Lauric acid has an inhibitory effect on the growth of several cancer cell lines. It exhibits time- and dose-dependent cytotoxic effects, activating anti-cancer mechanisms.
- Lauric acid at doses of 30 and 50 µg/mL downregulated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and decreased EGFR levels in a colon cancer model, leading to apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Importantly, EGFR signaling plays a critical role in cancer cell survival and progression.
Virgin coconut oil and lauric acid reduce chemotherapy side effects
Virgin coconut oil contains bioactive natural compounds that help counteract the toxicity of chemotherapy, including ferulic acid, gallic acid, rutin, caffeic acid, and quercetin. In mouse models, virgin coconut oil reduced the side effects of the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin by reducing nerve damage, liver damage, and heart damage.
Virgin coconut oil also reduces chemotherapy-induced liver and kidney toxicity and improves quality of life in breast cancer patients. In a mouse model, a combination of oral glucose and lauric acid improved cancer-induced myocardial damage.
Researchers have concluded: Virgin coconut oil and lauric acid have anti-cancer effects, increasing the anti-cancer effectiveness of standard chemotherapy drugs, according to News Medical.
