People in Tri Luc commune consider farming not only as a livelihood, but also a responsibility for their health. Therefore, besides improving productivity and quality, food hygiene and safety are always their top concerns.

Based on that reality, the project “Building a safe vegetable growing model using water-saving irrigation systems in Tri Luc and Tri Phai communes, Thoi Binh district” was born. Not only providing technical support, the project brings a new vitality, helping people change their production mindset, know how to connect and cooperate to develop together sustainably.

A notable highlight of the project is the water-saving irrigation system - a smart solution that helps bring water directly to the roots of the plants, limiting loss and evaporation, thereby reducing up to 50% of water compared to traditional irrigation methods.

According to Ms. Nguyen Kim Kien, Hamlet 7, Tri Luc Commune, who has been involved in the safe vegetable model for many years, the most difficult thing for her is not taking care of the vegetables, but... waking up at 3 am to water them. “Every day, my husband and I have to wake up early in the morning to water the vegetables in time to go to other work. Sometimes we have to water them all afternoon. But now I am much healthier. Thanks to the guidance of the technical staff, I dug a pond to store water, installed an economical irrigation system, more effective than expected, saving water and reducing the effort.”

For over 10 years, every time the crop is finished, Ms. Nguyen Kim Kien has been growing new crops.

Ms. Kien's household was one of the first households in the locality to apply the automatic irrigation model. At first, she did not have much faith in this irrigation system, so when the technical staff came to persuade her, the whole family did not agree to implement it. Engineer Nguyen Viet Hoang, Center for Science, Technology and Innovation (Department of Science and Technology), said: "At first, Ms. Kien and her husband did not have much faith, but we promised that if it was not effective, we would come in and dismantle the pipeline ourselves, returning it to its original state, and Ms. Kien reluctantly let us install the pipeline system."

The results were beyond expectations, the most successful thing from this project was not only clean vegetables and water saving, but also the change in people's awareness. "This is a safe vegetable growing model applying a water-saving irrigation system, implemented since September 2024, with science and technology funding from the People's Committee of Thoi Binh district. The project has completed its set goals, not only in terms of productivity but also in terms of mobilizing people to change production methods, applying science and technology to farming. The model helps farmers save production costs, towards safe agriculture , protecting consumers' health, and gradually developing clean agriculture", engineer Hoang shared.

From the initial 20 participating households (in Tri Phai and Tri Luc communes), the model quickly spread to many other localities such as Dam Doi and Tran Van Thoi, where more than 200 households participated in the project "Water is Life" chaired by the Provincial Women's Union. Through records, people were very excited to participate in the project, many households changed their awareness, were ready to apply science and technology, creating progress in the farming process, ensuring clean and safe products. Many households registered to produce safe food, aiming to diversify the consumption market.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Bao, Hamlet 6B, Khanh Binh Tay Commune, Tran Van Thoi District, said: “This irrigation system not only helps save water but also “frees the hands” of farmers. Before, I had to spend hours every day watering each row of vegetables, now I just need to turn on the switch and it’s done, thanks to that I have time to do other things while still being assured that the vegetables are watered enough. The soil is not muddy, and electricity is also more economical.”

Since applying the model, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Bao has saved time on watering and has had time to do many other things.

Farmers have gradually become accustomed to turning on the water valve and monitoring the water meter. Things that were once considered strange have now become habits for many households and, more importantly, they realize that when they change, everything can be better. The green vegetable beds not only bring economic benefits to the people, but also instill in them the belief that clean, sustainable agriculture is the right path to progress./.
